Feature Guide to the World Configuration

There are many settings you can tweak to customize your world exactly how you want it. Here's everything you can configure!

Accessing basic world settings

Here's how to access world settings:

  1. Access the Articles & World Manager from the left sidebar.
  2. Select the world name at the top of the left panel.
  3. Click the gear icon at the bottom toolbar.

Accessing advanced world settings

Some settings are only available under Advanced Settings. Whenever this guide refers to advanced settings, here's how to access them:

  1. Click the gear icon on the left sidebar.
  2. Then, click on the double gears.

This will take you to the full world configuration page, which contains all world settings, basic and advanced.

World settings

On the right of the world configuratio modal, there's a "world settings" option with some fundamental settings about your world.

  • Guild-only Privacy: This will toggle the overall visibility setting of the world. If you make your world public, content within it can still be private, while a private world can't have public content (although you can still give access to content using subscriber groups).
  • World RPG Game Systems: Select any number of RPG systems for your world. This will affect the types of statblocks you can create in your world. If you don't see this option, enable RPG features in your world.
  • Guild-only Open Secrets: This determines whether your co-authors can view secrets in your world or not. Learn more about this feature.
  • Guild-only Article Forced Privacy State: If enabled, new articles you create will always be private by default.
  • Editor: Lets you switch text editors for new articles. The Advanced Editor uses BBCode, while the Visual Editor lets you format without code.
  • Genres: Select one or more genres from the list. This will be used for world discovery purposes, so that other users can more easily find your work. If your world is private, it has no effect.
  • Delete world: You can irreversibly delete your entire world and everything within it (articles, maps, etc) from this page. Learn more about deleting your world.

At the bottom, there's a Go to Advanced Settings option that will take you to the full world configuration page.

Other settings

On the left area of the settings modal, settings are divided into these sections:

  • Content display: Use this to toggle whether certain features should be displayed in the world homepage in view mode. Some of these options are Guild-only. Learn more about homepage customization.
  • Guild-only Social media settings: Here you can enter your world's social media accounts (Discord, Patreon, Twitter, and Twitch), as well as disable the social media sharing buttons. You can also enable or disable World Anvil social features, such as article likes, comments, and followers.
  • Other display settings: These toggles affect the following features:
    • Master Display Article Tooltips: By default, when a reader has their mouse over an article link in your world, they'll see a preview of the article. By disabling this, instead of the preview they will see a much smaller tooltip with the article excerpt (which you can edit in an article's styling settings).
    • Display Block Headers: Article blocks display the article's cover image. By disabling this, article blocks will not show the cover image.
    • Word count goal: This will enable or disable a word count goal in the edit interface only, under the world title area. This has no effect on view mode, and the goal can be edited by clicking on it. Guild members can raise this goal above 10k words.
  • Advanced options: Still in the settings modal, the "Advanced Options" setting enables two fields: World Subtitle and World Credits. These fields will be displayed in the world homepage.

Advanced settings

The full world configuration page has a number of options not present in the basic world settings modal. This is a quick overview of them!

Note that this page doesn't have autosave enabled! So any time you change your world settings here, you have to click the "save changes" button at the top right.

General Settings

Under the Settings tab, there are four advanced options:

  • Language: This will change the language of predefined text in your world (such as article prompt headers). Note that translations are community-contributed, so there may be mistakes.
  • World Profile Display Weight: This affects how the world is showcased in your World Anvil user profile. The world with the highest number will be displayed first in the list.
  • Storage Status: If this is a world you no longer develop but you don't want to delete it, set this to "Stored". Stored worlds are hidden in the world switcher under "Stored Worlds" section.
  • Excerpt: This is a short description of the world that will be displayed when you embed the world as a block link.

Display

In the Global Options sub-tab, the "Visibility Toggle" checkbox lets you hide and reveal content on your world with the click of a button. Check the guide for details.

Additionally, the Global Content sub-tab has a number for fields that let you add content to certain areas of every page in your world (such as a copyright footer, a header bar, and more). Check the guide for details.

Also under the Display tab, these two features are designed for professional Anvilites of the Sage tier to edit how your world interacts with web browsers and search engines:

  • Page title: This will be displayed in the tab name for your world, as well as the default browser bookmark name. You can also include relevant keywords for SEO purposes.

Social

The Social tab has two advanced options:

  • Guild-only Followers naming: Change what followers are referred as in your world to theme them around your setting. This will appear in your homepage and your world followers page.
  • Master Discord webhook: Use this to send updates about your articles to Discord with the click of a button. Learn more about the Discord webhook.

Monetization

Available to the Grandmaster subscription tier and above. Upgrade here.

This tab is mostly meant for professional users and includes a number of features that will help you with this. here are all of them:

  • Custom access denied page: select the page that you want your visitors to be redirected to if they don't have access to the page they tried to visit. Check the guide for details.
  • World activation page custom content: change this to alter the content of the page above the activation page of your world. This will replace the default content completely.
  • Sage World URL slug: Change the default worldname-username part of your world's URL to something else. Make sure to keep this simple and only use characters that can be used in URLs. For more check out this guide.
  • Secured links: this is unchecked by default. If you check it, your readers will be able to click links leading to private content. They won't be able to view the content itself and will see an access denied error. Use this in combination with the custom access denied page to lead these readers to a specific page (for example, for monetization purposes).
  • Sage Google analytics tracking code: add a Google Analytics Tracking Code to all the pages of the world. This enables the tracking of visitors with Google Analystics.
  • World community: this feature is still a work in progress, and currently it allows you to enable self-assignable subscriber groups. In the future, this will also toggle other community-related features.
  • Sage World domain name: fill out this form to replace the domain of the world with a custom domain. Setting up a custom domain is a manual process—check the guide for details and tips to speed up the process.

Additional advanced options

Finally, on the right side of the world configuration page, there's an "Open Tools & Advanced Actions" button. Click it to reveal the following options:

  • Guild-only Transfer World: A world can be transfered to another user. The person who is receiving the world must be a Guild member with equal or higher membership than you.
  • Export World: creates an export of most of the world's content into an offline copy. For more details, check out this guide.
  • Refresh World Index: sometimes your world will stop "seeing" certain articles when you try to link to them. If you notice issues with getting the proper links to articles that exist, click this button to force a refresh of the articles list.
  • World Widgets: copy the three world widget BBCodes: World Link, World Block, Follow World Button and World Current Date.
  • Guild-only Open Data & RSS Feed: open data endpoints are only available for public worlds and will display the list of public articles in your world. This is a great way to announce updates to your work on World Anvil outside of the platform if you have the technical know-how.
  • Delete or Leave World: you can delete your world here. This process CANNOT be reverted and it deletes all content within this world. Authors of a world can leave the world if they no longer wish to be a part of the project.
