The Vyliar'faeien

The most powerful mage to grace Varia

The Archmage Vyliar'faeien (a.k.a. Chosen of Faenorias)

The Archmage Vyliar'faeien was as mysterious as he was powerful, a trend among most of Avalon's Guardians. By name alone, the Vyliar'faeien could be traced back to the Feylands, though his associated House, by induction, had made no claims to him. Thus, there may have been a situation where a mage of minimal repute—for reports of the famed mage prior to his association with Avalon remain nonexistent—had managed to catch the attention of ancient Avon's court, if not that of the legendary King Avalon himself. However, more extraordinary is his story when you account for the extent of his exploits in combating, and ultimately besting, the onslaught of the Scourge in Varia. His grasp over magic remained unmatched throughout his life after the war, even by the other masters present in the Varian Coalition and amongst the Guardians. He spearheaded the creation of powerhouse organizations in the continent: the Arcane Society and the Sabers. . . No one could have predicted the extent to which the Vyliar'faeien would ultimately affect the entirety of Varia and permeate its history for generations to come.

Personal history

By Varian historical eras, the Vyliar'faeien is estimated to have been born either during the First Era or in the early half of the War of the Scourge. It remains unknown how or why the Vyliar'faeien first came to Varia, but most historians agree that the mage had established his presence in the continent prior to the Evergreens revoking its isolation and sending aid to Varian forces. The Vyliar'faeien's earlier timeline has muddled perceptions on his origins. He more than likely belonged to House Faeien, a noble elven family in the Kingdom of the Evergreens in the Feylands, since his given name of reference follows an altered version of the kingdom's standard upper class naming conventions. However, his presence in Varia prior to the Evergreens sending its expeditionary forces brings into question the means by which the mage broke the kingdom's isolation, which has often been connected, albeit loosely, to his later lack of recognized familial associations with House Faeien.

The Vyliar'faeien more than likely arrived in the ancient kingdom of Avon as an already accomplished mage by skill, though with little renown. His appearance in the kingdom may very well have been a matter of chance, though some argue that the Vyliar'faeien had caught Avalon's attention as a few of the legendary king's guardians before him. During his time in Avon, the future archmage established a rapport with Avalon's first court mage, Zivier, and eventually secured a place on the Avonian court as a minor advisor or consultant regarding magical affairs. As the War of the Scourge progressed, the Vyliar'faeien gained standing with King Avalon for his proactive stance on the conflict, which culminated in him spearheading the formation of the Varian Coalition. Eventually, the Vyliar'faeien overtook Zivier as court mage and received an appointment to head the Varian Coalition's arsenal of mages and magical armaments.

As Varia's surviving civilizations escalated its efforts against the Scourge, the Vyliar'faeien, now known as the "Archmage," took charge of the management of Avon while Avalon personally saw to the command of the alliance's battle forces. His presence in the Avonian court became an increasingly controversial matter, though none dared to question his authority due to his prowess. During this period, the Archmage also conducted the early phases of his research to remove the Scourge from the continent all the while thwarting Zivier's attempts at betraying the Coalition. In the later phases of the war, the Vyliar'faeien directed divisions of mages to carry out the magicks which would bring the conflict to an end. When the bulk of the Scourge was banished from Varia, the Vyliar'faeien turned his attention to the continent's restoration.

During the Second Era, the Vyliar'faeien adjusted many of the magical methodology he developed during the war for use in physically reconstructing Varia's civilization, which gave him the title of the "Architect." He also spurred the founding of the Arcane Society, a transcontinental organization meant to regulate the use of magic in Varia, and supported the creation of the Sabers, an elite peacekeeping faction meant to balance the powers of the Arcane Society and the Order of Avalon. The Vyliar'faeien served as the Arcane Society's first Grand Magister, established its headquarters in the the Grand Arcaneum, and led the way in magical innovation until his resignation from the organization in 500 2E. He remained politically active as a leading member of the Sabers for at least another century. Despite his prominence, the Vyliar'faeien gradually faded from Varian affairs. The Sabers possess the last known record of his activities, dated back to 598 2E, which they claimed involved a confidential assignment forwarded by the organization. The Archmage Vyliar'faeien had not reappeared since that time.
