Farynn Almayz Character in Yeia | World Anvil

Farynn Almayz

Second son of the desert king Elthyn III of the Almayz tribe. He is considered by many Sun Elves as one of the greatest Historians, poet geographer and calligrapher of all time. And its influence and that of his numerous works is felt not only in Unhellion but across all Yeia.

Birth and Youth

Farynn Almayz, whose full name is Farynn in Elthyn Alaziz Almayz, was born somewhere in the Sea of the Doomed in Unhellion's southern deserts during one of the migrations of his Desert elf tribe. His honorific nickname "Alaziz" means something like "Traveller" but this was bestowed to him many years after when he visited all the elven holy sites.   Farynn was sent to Ymhilean when he was a teen to study at the famous school of the temple of Ahira (Unhellion's first university) and later to the tower of Wisdom where he became a friend and disciple of Merkash Baban, the famous elven sage. He became an adherent of the Baanite school of magic . Some of his first works of calligraphy were quotes of famous sages from the Baanite school.

Rise and Fall

His talent and culture were quickly noticed by people around him. In 690 BP he began to work as an adjutant of the Minister of Finances, Athayl Brightwood. He spent 50 years working for him Athayl was accused of corruption. Many said it was a false accusation but it resulted in both Athayl and Farynn (as its adjutant) to be exiled from the kingdom for 75 years. They took refuge in the elven realms in today’s Southern Seria. There Farynn wrote his first famous books "About the elves of the South and the Anthynerynn", "About the origin of the elves" and "Book of the human realms of the west" the latter being the first elven account of the now unified Seris Empire under the Arshakids.

Exile and travels

His passion for knowledge and piety made him crossing the Interior Sea and visit the Kingdom of the Green Elves where he managed to get an interview with its king and visited the libraries of the capital. He also managed to visit the Sanctuary of the Holy Tree near the Thyssalis Sea, one of the Elven Holy places. Farynn then sailed around the coast of the Storm Sea visiting the prosperous elven colonies there. In 632 BP he arrived at the delta of the Parana River (where modern Boria on the Delta is located). He described the giant waterfall that today lies north of the great city.   He then went north following the river until he reached Bazira, then a prosperous elven town and Banias afterwards where he was lavishly welcomed by the High priest/king of the city (As he was a member of royalty). Farynn wrote an extensive description of the elven of these regions:
They dress like our ancestors of the old times; their clothing is the same you can see in the reliefs of our temples dating from the first dynasties"
Farynn was hosted in the king's palace in the neighbouring forest settlement. He also took part in many scientific, theological and philosophical discussions with local elf sages. In total, he spent 2 years in the South before returning to the green elf capital where he received news of the beginning of the Ikarian conquest of the Kallian plains. In 612 AP the King pardoned Athayl and Farynn and both returned to Unhellion. It was around this time when he met his future wife.

Marriage and rest of his life

In 609 BP Farynn married Merkash's (his old master at the tower of wisdom) granddaughter, Amyra. His father Haqur was minister of foreign affairs and also very wealthy. Despite being a arranged marriage the couple fell in love almost instantly. Amyra was a very beautiful and intelligent girl that shared Farynn's passion about travelling, calligraphy and books. In 596 BP Farynn was appointed as minister of foreign affairs, replacing his father in law who became Voice of the King (Prime Minister or Grand Vizier of Unhellion). With its new position and the money he earned as minister he bought a villa near the river Phyryun, near the desert and its fellow desert tribes (As Farynn never forget about his origins and was quite proud of them). In 541 he and Amyra travelled to the South, where he visited the Temple Complex of the Sky father at the town of Ays Berion (today Ashibi, in the Seris Empire), one the holy places of the Elven world. He returned again to the South of the Kingdom of the Green elves in 520 BP where he made drawings of the local fauna. He continued his journey visiting Ikaria in what became the first interaction between the Ikarian Empire and the Kingdom of Unhelion .

And in 515 he finished his trip across Teria visiting the Snow Elf capital making a drawing of an Artificial Sun (Although he was not allowed to see how it worked), and also was able to pray at the Shrine of Ahira, the goddess of fire at the Snow elf capital. After his return, he was given the honorific nickname "Alaziz" (The one who made the travel (to the holy places)). He spent the rest of his live writing books about magic, theology and calligraphy. He made the inscription at the entrance of the temple of Ahira (one of the masterpieces of elven calligraphy). In 401 he was named Supervisor of the Academy of Magic and Science of Unhellion, office that he retained until he died in 310 BP.

Legacy

He had five children with Amyra: Yfryn, Amyra, Naib, Farynn the younger, Aqub and Uspa. 900 years later, two of his great grandsons, Anur and Oridriell, met Yuya, the Seris adventurer and his friends when they arrived to Unhellion to save the Sun elf Prince.   He is regarded as the first great explorer and scientist of Unhellion. His travels to the Kingdom of the Green Elves and the Elven Realms in today's Seris Empire helped the Sun elves to renew trade and diplomatic relations with this brother nations. Specially with the elves of Southern Seria, who were the ancestors of the Anthynerynn, one of the sub-ethnicities of the Sun elves and the ancestors of the Desert elves . In fact, in one of his visits to those regions he was able to meet members of a distant branch of the family, that still remember that part of the family migrated to the North. He was one of the first who theorized about the origin of the elves as a race and compiled one of the first General History of the Elves.

I love the extensiveness of his history, and the fact that the arts (writing/calligraphy/poetry) are just as much a priority as his travel.

Thank you!! Yes, Farynn's travel was not only a diplomatic one but also a quest for inspiration! . I'll perhaps add some of his "Calligraphy works" in the future in this article!
