Tiumosk city Settlement in VISCERIUM | World Anvil

Tiumosk city

This article is a work in progress
Why the original settlers chose the Obansk plains I can't really be sure... maybe it was the opportunity to hunt whales easier? Or maybe they just really enjoyed the sadistic sport of nude ice diving?
The winter city of Tiumosk is located in the great Obansk plains. The icy winds here in the northern hemisphere pelt the thick, steel-clad, ten storey tall outer wall leaving large scars and pot-marks across it's surface. Sharp angled stalagmites of ice rise out from the snow covered soil and creep ever further upwards with each blizzard.   Atop the mighty metal ring, barbed wire and iron spikes line the underside of an overhang that braces battlements from which remote-controlled turrets are mounted in sequence around the entire perimeter. Additionally open sections are left for direct-fire armaments and personnel with hand-held weaponry to fire from. At a select few key placements, thick towers serve as look-out stations, network relays and communication hubs.   Plumes of steam rise from industrial pipes outside the city in addition to the huge chimney stacks and vents inside the wall. Snow never touches the surface within Tiumosk for the heat of industry and the city's dense population warm the air whilst tall brutalist tower blocks prevent any winds that might have crept over the outer wall.   Due to Tiumosk's proximity to the northern pole, it's inhabitants are well accustomed to Demon activity. They unfortunately lost a sector of the city to Krathan, Nadir of Wrath's Underlings in recent times and have had to construct a new barrier from the now abandoned residential towers, blocking the roads with scaffolded plates of metal, backed by mountains of rubble and dirt. In addition to barricading the tower windows and filling the lower levels with reinforced concrete.

Culture

    People

The people of Tiumosk were once required by default to be resistant to the harsh environment in which they live. Many people within the city still are, thanks to their genetic heritage. However, most have not felt blistering winds or the icy touch of snow in their entire lives. The densely-packed towers and multi-levelled roads within the city mean that the most extreme weather many here have ever experienced is heavy rain. Even then, that rain might have run off of a few layers of asphalt and concrete before reaching them.

    Food

The majority of food consumed in Tiumosk is lab-grown fish and meat that is artificially fortified with nutrients, protein, fat and antioxidants. Though there is availability of real fish and meat sourced from the Dodailist sea or out in the plains beyond the city's walls, these are deemed as a costly luxury and are more often than not reserved for the most wealthy citizens of the city.   Vertical farms do provide a good selection of vegetables, berries and other plants but these again are a bit more expensive than the lab-grown fish and meat products due to grow times and harvesting constraints.

    Art

Much like the traditional clothing in this region - consisting mostly of thick furs and leather with striking patterns in vibrant colours on cloth and linen elements, art can be found in many elements of both clothing and decoration alike. Specifically, the bone, antler and wood-craft of hand weapons and tools are of note thanks to the elegant carving and combination in the hilts, handles and shafts of these items.   Additionally, the feltwork and embroidery techniques of adding unique patterns to clothing is something that has persisted into the modern era and can be seen in homes as decoration, on the cuffs of jackets, trousers, shirts and skirts alike.

The lost sector

Along it's northern border wall, a large, cavernous hole now pierces through the steel curtain that once protected this city in it's entirety. The violent weather outside the city quickly filled the nearby streets with deep snow and ridges of sharp ice, causing many to die from hypothermia. Those who were unable to escape the rapid breaching of this sector by the hordes of Wrath and who did not die from exposure were unfortunately trapped within and forced to survive for as long as they could and eventually die too, for no official rescue party would be sent.   Thankfully for the rest of the city's inhabitants the combined efforts of the local security forces, PCP Army, PCP Navy and industrial workers, a new barrier was erected utilising the pre-existing structures of the towers once called homes. Once the sector was finally sealed-off from the rest of the city, a zero-tolerance trespassing zone was marked a few hundred metres before the base of the new barrier and the now wasteland on the other side was named "cipher" for nothing but dread existed there anymore.   Now infested by skulking groups of underlings aligned with Krathan, Nadir of Wrath, sector cipher remains a dangerous reminder for those within the city to not become complacent with day-to-day life.

Military-industrial complex

Due to the massive scale of the military and industrial zones allocated within Tiumosk, the population density numbers are incredibly skewed. These zones cause residential and commercial areas to become nothing but miss-matched tower blocks and overlapping roads. Let alone the more recent influx of citizens needing residence due to being displaced from the now aptly named Sector Cipher.

    Offshore oil platform

The Dodailist sea that Tiumosk borders is rich with sub-surface oil deposits. For a time, the city utilised a series of oil wells along the coast to draw out oil for refinement. As the populace grew and the plentiful oil began to dry up, the local government and industry powers opted to move their oil mining efforts to a large offshore platform from which they could expand their efforts and no longer impact the local population.

    Icefield docks

Carved into the east-southeast bank of Tiumosk, a military–industrial dock reaches outwards into chunky flakes of sea ice, gently bobbing and breaking against reinforced concrete structures.
These docks serve as one of two main methods of importing and exporting for Tiumosk, the other being a rail network in the south of the city.

      Security

In order to protect the assets of the PCP Navy, the docks and associated warehouses reserved for military purposes are cordoned off by large fences, manned gates and a tightly monitored patrol that walks its perimeter.   The presence of military personnel here is equally beneficial to the workers, the security of the industrial docks and ships, as well as the multitude of warehouses. This is owed mostly to the PCP Navy's more rigorous checks and decisive response to threats should they arise.

    Black iron Railway

Utilising several diesel locomotives, the Black iron railway connects the Icefield docks to other industrial sectors within the city as well as connecting Tiumosk to its nearest neighbour Barnomsk.

      The locomotives

Fitted with large wedge-shaped snowploughs and a massive 9,850-horsepower diesel engine, these hefty locomotives are capable of breaking through the thickest of snow and ice that may block their path.
