Johnathan "John" Stoker
Johnathan Quincey Stoker (a.k.a. John)
John comes from a long, proud line of vampire hunters. On his father's side, he's a descendant of the family who excels at making people believe vampires are nothing more than figments of fiction writers' imagination. And on his mother's side, he's related to the original Texan vampire hunter who helped kill Dracula. John is a blueblood hunter, but that has never stopped him from giving a hundred percent to the job and expecting everyone else to do the same.
Holidays
John has a particular fondness for Dia de los Muertos. The holiday has special significance for him after the death of his brother Gabriel, and it's the only holiday he doesn't feel his brother's absence painfully during, since he always finds comfort in the idea that Gabe is with him and his family in spirit.
Physical Description
Identifying Characteristics
John has three deep scars, left by a vampire attack, on the left side of his neck.
Special abilities
John possesses a mild version of "Second Sight", an ability to see through fae glamours. On one occasion, his Abuela Rosa believed he had a prophetic dream.
Apparel & Accessories
John wears the typical hunter's leather jacket, as well as a pair of black leather wrist guards stamped with the logo of the Luna Club, which allows him unrestricted entry to speak with the owner. He carries a silver-plated Bowie knife that was handed down in the Morgan side of his family for generation, and a six-foot silver-laced, electrified whip.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
John is the son of Sonora Morgan and Stephen Stoker, both themselves descendants of old hunter families. He grew up knowing about the hidden world of vampires and learning how to hunt them. He inherited his mother's quick wit and skill with weapons, and his father's ability to spin a good story.
Education
John spent his childhood in the Amarillo, Texas public schools. In high school, he was involved in the chess club for one year and the theater group for three. His theater training has made him an expert at deflecting suspicion of the true nature of his job, and at running cons. His mother taught him how to handle himself with the various weapons in a hunter's arsenal, and his father taught him how to write reports and create cover stories for vampire activity.
John trained as a hunter at the Amarillo Academy, the oldest hunter training school in the United States, founded by his great-grandfather Jeremiah Morgan.
Employment
John worked for the Amarillo Agency until 1992, when a hunt gone wrong led to him handing in his resignation and transferring to the Los Angeles Chimera Hunter Agency. There, he was a member of a field team until the battle with Arion in 1998. After that, he transferred to recruit training, where he takes new Academy graduates for six-week probationary rotations before they are admitted as full-time hunters.
Mental Trauma
John refuses to talk about the hunt that went wrong in Amarillo. All that anyone knows is that it's the reason he no longer trusts fae.
Intellectual Characteristics
John is loyal and dutiful. Once he's made up his mind, it's hard to get him to change. He takes the safety of the people working with him very seriously, and will go to great lengths to protect them.
Morality & Philosophy
John believes in protecting people who for one reason or another cannot protect themselves. He feels that it is his duty to defend people from the vampire threat that they are not legally allowed to know exists. John is very duty-driven. He's never considered the idea that he could have chosen not to follow in his family's footsteps. For him, his career path was simple. He knows about vampires, when few do, so there was no question of turning his back on that life.
Taboos
Since he's driven by duty, John struggles to understand those who are not. There is no room in his world for cowardice or selfishness. He expects his fellow hunters to be just as willing to lay their lives on the line as he is.
Any attempt to talk to him about his former agency or what happened in Amarillo will be met with stubborn refusal and probably a cold shoulder for some time.
Personality Characteristics
Personality Quirks
John is a stress baker. He's actually quite a good cook, and when he's worried about something the first place he goes is to the kitchen.
Social
Family Ties
On his mother's side John is descended from the family of the Texan hunter who formed the basis for "Quincey Morris" in Bram Stoker's novel.
On his father's side, he is descended from Bram Stoker himself.
