Silver Screens - Robin, John Stoker, Kira Burke, Cody Dayton, Emma Cole
Cody grabs two bottles of coke and one grapefruit soda out of the fridge, and a bottle of water for Robin. He opens one coke and tosses the other to John, who catches it out of the air easily. Cody has to admit it’s kind of fun testing the other hunters’ reflexes.
Kira’s doing something to the TV remote, so Cody just sets down her can of grapefruit soda next to her, unopened. He flips through the stack of DVDs to see which one will be best to start with.
He’s checked out every vampire movie he could find at the library (aside from Twilight because Emma absolutely refused to come if they watched that one). He figures they should start with the ones Kira put sticky notes of ‘actually bearable’ or Emma wrote 'not painful butchery of vampire culture’ on. They can pull out some of the truly awful ones once they’re prepared to fall asleep during them (or to have Emma throw something at the TV).
Apparently, Emma has already been invited into John’s apartment at some point in the past, although neither of them is being very forthcoming with that story. So everyone’s gathered there for the movie night, since it doesn’t necessitate anyone having to permit a vampire into their space who hadn’t already done so.
He holds up ’Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ and John groans. “Really? If Emma can veto ’Twilight’, can’t I veto unfaithful adaptations of my ancestor’s novel?”
“I thought you’d enjoy pointing out all the things they got wrong. Seeing as you have insider knowledge.”
“Okay, fair point.” John shrugs. “Settle in, folks. Emma might not be the most insulted member of this crew."
Cody did think of all the versions of Dracula remakes he’s seen, this one is as close to the book as any. But he’s kind of looking forward to seeing John get righteously indignant about deviations from the spirit of the original. At least this version actually has a Quincey Morris. He feels like that alone should win some points.
Emma breezes past to settle on the couch, a bottle of synth-blood in her hand. "At least that one has the decency not to have vampires bursting into flames in the sunlight. Honestly.”
It was, admittedly, a bit of a shock to learn that vampires are no more vulnerable to sunlight than any random light-skinned human. At least in terms of combustion. They do experience extreme lethargy and weakness, but they won’t burn to ash if left out in the sun. They’ll most often just pass out. And likely be outed. So…still sort of deadly. but not in a dramatic way. And older vampires who’ve had practice can move about in the daylight at least minimally. Although now that they know more about daywalkers, John’s mentioned that a possible reason his great-grandfather’s book mentions so many daylight sightings of Dracula could have been that Lucy was a part-fae like Robin, her blood conferring temporary daywalker powers.
The truth is, they’ll most likely never know for sure. But Cody’s reveling in the world of possibilities and ideas that being part of this world has opened up. He’s always loved researching his stories. But now…now he gets to talk to the real live (or undead) people.
He sticks the movie in and while they wait for the previews to finish, Cody and John grab the snacks from the kitchen.
They have regular popcorn, caramel corn, and chocolate-covered popcorn, all homemade. Cody has seen Robin try to force down microwave popcorn before. It’s just sad. John baked some sort of little cinnamon-ginger cookies that smell amazing, too.
Robin has half the blankets from his house stacked beside the couch, and he’s holding the little orphan kitten he’s been taking care of. It needs regular feedings right now, so he brought it along. The little ball of orange fluff is tucked up under Robin’s chin, sleeping.
All of them crowd onto the couch, and Cody pulls out a notebook as the opening credits roll. He’s not going to waste the opportunity to write down some of the truly hilarious things he’s sure John is going to say tonight. He never would have guessed that someday he’d be having a movie night with an actual vampire and three vampire hunters (he’s not sure he’s ready to include himself in that company just yet), but he absolutely wouldn’t trade this for anything.
