Dominus Military Formation in Unahlum | World Anvil

Dominus

The Dominus is the general term for an army used by the Ahntier city state. While not all Domini are created equal, they are each made for one purpose. The subjugation of territory under the rule of Ahntier. The make up of each Dominus is directed by its Prefect, the supreme commander of the Dominus, and is so limited by their own imagination and resources. However, Ahntier has a long history of warfare, and as such does have a recorded specification for what is considered a "standard" Dominus.

Composition

Manpower

A standard infantry Dominus breaks down as such. 6000 Soldiers. 1200 non-combatant personnel for engineering and maintance. 130 Officers of varying ranks. 1 Legate in command. 300 supply wagons.

Equipment

The common infantry of the Ahntier Dominus is equipped with steel breast plate armor, a tower shield, a long spear, and a long sword. Archers are given lighter, ringed armor and long bows, with long sword side arms. Variations exist depending on the individual units within the Dominus.   The Logistics personnel within each Dominus are equipped with metal working and carpentry gear, for weapon, armor, and wagon maintenance. As well as the camp cooking supplies.

Weaponry

The Dominus Primus can pick and choose equipment at their discretion, usually at their own expense. Commonly infantry are given a long spear and long sword, archers are given long bows and long swords, while cavalry will be equipped with lances. Logistical and engineering personnel are generally afford short swords, in the case the camp should be attacked.

Vehicles

Horses and wagons.

Structure

A Dominus is lead foremost by its Primus, who assigns a Legate to command in their absence. A Dominus is then normally assigned six young officers in training called Tribunes, who are assistance to other officers. While these hold no real power, the Tribune assisting the Legate is considered his second in command and holds such authority in the Legates name. The most senior officer of the Dominus is named Prefect, and serves as quarter master and overseer of the Logistics teams. If need be they are expected to command the Dominus as well.   A Dominus is made from the formation of ten Crusades. Each Crusade is lead by a Vexillum, the most senior of whom bears the Dominus standard in their Crusade, giving them rank over all others. Each Vexillum is expected to be able to lead his Crusade as an independent army if necessary.   Each Crusade is itself made from six Castellan formations. A Castellan is lead by a Custodi and seconded by an Optio. Each Castellan is expected to keep it's own training regimen.   Each Castellan is formed from ten Hastas formations. The Hastas is the smallest military formation and is comprised of ten soldiers, and two logistical non-combatants. Each Hasta is lead by a Decanus, who is chosen by his peers to lead.

Tactics

The traditional Ahntier Dominus relies heavily on the Phalanx, a shield wall bristling with spears, and interlocked shields to defend each soldier. When possible such Domini prefer to face opponents on open ground, and crush them beneath the weight of heavy infantry.

Training

Ahntier demands a highly professional level of training to enter the military, and while raw recruits might be inexperienced, a commander can be certain that they have been drilled in the combat tactics necessary. Since the military is able to pay as a full time occupation, soldiers are able to dedicate their time to training.
