Prefect
The Prefect is a luxury position given to Vexillum who are near the point of retirement. Older soldiers who are loosing their fire in combat, but whose minds are still a valuable asset to the Dominus. Occasionally a very dedicated Legate will take this roll rather than leave their Dominus, but such instances are rare.
The Prefect is in charge of all of the logistics of supply and engineering involved with the Dominus. How to set up fortified walls, the operation of siege equipment, and quartermaster of the armory. In the worse case scenario they have the experience to lead the Dominus, or command the non-combatants of camp in defense if the enemy finds them. However, in most cases, the position of Prefect is safe behind the lines, supporting the Dominus.
Qualifications
The position of Prefect is only available to Vexillum and Legates, although it is generally considered a step down for a Legate.
Appointment
The position of Prefect is filled only when the previous Prefect finally steps down or dies. By tradition the most senior Vexillum then becomes the new Prefect. However, a Vexillum may pass this appointment to the next. However, if all Vexillum pass, then it returns to the most senior who must accept, or resign.
When the old Prefect steps down there is a short ceremony, performed before the whole Dominus, where the Old Prefect passes on the keys and logs to the new Prefect. They affix the mantel of stratago on the new offices shoulders, and then walk along the honor guard to leave the Dominus.
Duties
A Prefect is the highest ranking Logistics officer in the Dominus. Any issues revolving around food, weapons, armor, beasts of burden, or wagons falls to the Prefect. They are the last person who can command the entire Dominus, and see to the defense of the camp.
Responsibilities
Quartermaster of all gear and supplies.
Construction of fortifications.
Construction and upkeep of siege weapons
Organization of foraging parties, or other supply acquisition.
Defense of the camp and supply wagons.
Benefits
Prefects obtain a salary that allows them to purchase and furnish a decent home, or modest plot of land for themselves. The Prefect of the Dominus is often treated like a favored grandparent by the younger soldiers, and their experience and wisdom is often invaluable.
Accoutrements & Equipment
Upon becoming Prefect, the soldiers breastplate is stamped, adding a wheel boarder around their heraldry, denoting their position as logistics officer.
The Prefect holds the keys to armory, the logbook of equipment and supplies, and are granted the Mantel of the Stratago. A red cord with golden fastenings bearing the heraldry of the Dominus.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
The Prefect can only be removed from office by voluntary resignation, or if a majority vote of the Vexillum, Custodi, and Optios declares the Prefect unfit. This is a rare instance that usually only occurs in the case of the most tenacious and stubborn of Prefects.

Length of Term
The official term limit for a Prefect is 30 years. However it is exceptionally rare for one to serve their entire term before stepping down, so this limit is really more of a formality.
