Tribunes

The Tribunes are six individuals chosen from the political rank of Questor and gives to a Dominus to serve for one year as observers and assistants, to learn the ways of the higher military. Out of the six Tribunes, one will be chosen to function as the Legates second in command, and will be trusted with authority to give orders and command the Dominus if need be. The remainder are given to the Prefect and the Vexillum but are not given any authority. What they can do, however, is report back to the senate about the operations of a given Dominus.

Requirements

Only Questers of the Senate may be appointed to the position of Tribune.

Appointment

The possition of Tribune is assigned by the Senate, who picks six Questors to accompany each Dominus for one year. However, who they will shadow within the Dominus is appointed by the Legate.

Duties

A Tribune is expected to do exactly as they told while on tour with a Dominus. Despite their position as new senators they are not allowed to talk down to anyone. While it is assume each Tribune has the honorary rank associated with whom they are shadowing, they normally do not receive the same level of respect. Even if they are assisting the Legate. The Tribunes themselves are expected to be respectful of everyone, even the common soldier.

Responsibilities

The Tribune is responsible for seeing to any duty they are assigned by the person they are shadowing. Normally this means military drill, but if the Tribune has been particularly snotty they can be ordered to scoop manure or clean the kitchen supplies. Nothing is truly off the table for what a Tribune can be made to do.   While the tribunes are glorified assistance and messengers, the Tribune to the Legate is actually required to be prepared to take command, and slighting this Tribune is considered slighting the Legate to many soldiers.

Benefits

Gaining military experience, and possibly proving yourself useful to a Legate is the most benefit a Tribune can hope to gain. The position is unpaid, but is considered a necessary stepping stone in a political career. One can even gain honors if they prove themselves in combat during their tour.

Accoutrements & Equipment

A Tribune is given a set of armor and a long sword, which they may keep at the end of their time, or return it to the armory. The Tribune of the Legate is given a short cape in the same colors of the Legate to denote that position. This cape is usually kept, if the Tribune hopes to cultivate a reputation with a particular Legate or Dominus.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

If a Tribune acts poorly, or incompetently, the officer they are shadowing has the authority to dismiss them to be an unattached observer. This is considered a black mark on a Questors record. If their behavior becomes noticeably bad then the Prefect, Legate, or Primus has the authority to dismiss them and send them home. This is considered particularly bad, and a Questor who has been dismissed by a Legate is not likely to rise any further in the Senate.
