The Legate must also follow through on the intentions of the Primus when acting independently in the field, guarding the realm given to him and facing threats to the Empire.

On top of this, a loyal Legate can reasonably expect to be made governor or a province in succession of the Primus, which in turn comes with its own benefits. Even if one does not, a Legate is afforded a home in Ahntier itself, and a parcel of land upon retirement. The condition of this parcel somewhat varies depending on the feelings of the Primus, and what they have in their authority to distribute.

Accoutrements & Equipment

The battle standard of a Dominus, while born by a Vexillum, belongs to the Legate. When they retire the standard becomes part of their household heraldry, and a new one is made for the next Legate. A household with a collection of standards is consider quite the honor. On top of this it is customary for a Primus to give his Legates some article personally. Swords are the most common, as a Primus can easily commission a fine weapon. But this symbolic token can be anything.   Upon becoming Legate the soldier receives a new stamp on their breastplate, over lapping the previous stamps and completing the symbol of Ahntier heraldry, lacking only the laurel boarder reserved for the Primus. Each Legate receives a long cape to add to their uniform. The specific coloration of the cape is dictated by the Primus who first appoints them Legate.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

A Legate can only be dismissed from his position on account of treason or incompetance. A particularly bad string of defeats may lead to such a dismissal, and few Primus would toss aside their Legate carelessly over minor defeats, or even a single disastrous defeat. In either event, dismissal of a Legate can only come from a Primus, unless the Primus of the Dominus has also been removed. Then it requires a majority vote of the Senate and moral authorization from the Rex Maxum.
