Decanus
The Decanus is an informal position, but is recognized by higher authority as the lowest rank of leadership within a Dominus. the Decanus is chosen by the members of his Hasta to serve as a squad leader. If the Hasta has a problem, the Decanus will be their voice.
Qualifications
Usually the Decanus is the most experienced soldier in a Hasta. But the rank is so informal that there are no official requirements other than being picked by your peers.

The Decanus is chosen by the Hasta, from the Hasta, for the Hasta.
Duties
The primary roll of the Decanus is to keep an eye on the rest of the Hasta, making sure internal squabbles don't arise. They also serve as the mouth piece for their Hasta, especially if an issue needs to be taken around the Custodi to a higher office.

Make sure the Hasta stays out of trouble, and in fighting condition.

Accoutrements & Equipment
The Decanus is equipped like any other member of the Hastas, with breast plate, tower shield, long spear, and long sword. Some Castellans prescribe that each Decanus mark themselves out in some way. Such as a distinct pattern on their shield or helmet, or a paldron. These decisions are dictated by Castellan tradition, however, and no prescribed by writ of law for the Dominus.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
The position of Decanus is so informal that any official dismissal would be based on a far more serious infraction, leading to expulsion from the military. In practice the Decanus serves as such until promoted out from the Hasta, or the rest of the squad simply decides to change.
