Greinar Chain

Dividing the centre of Troyvalden is a broad hilly range. The hills are rugged and rocky, and would be a fairly imposing mountainous region were it not for the high facades of the The Fire Peaks in the north. The fellsides are riddled with caves both natural and mined, but the mountains are now mostly bled dry of the ores and gems they once held.

Geography

The mountains of the Greinar Chain reach at their highest around 7000ft above sea level. They are rugged and rocky, with many crags and tumbling streams. The valleys are deep and narrow in the higher ground, with occasional crevasses sinking deep into the ground. Nearer the edges of the chain there are wider, grassy valleys. There is only one easy pass across the mountains - the Great West Road through the centre, passing the fortified dwarven city of Vilknier - but dangerous high paths can be found in other areas.

Fauna & Flora

The rugged landscape supports little life above ground on the higher tops, but lower slopes and valleys are covered in tough grasses, ferns and heathers. Small hardy evergreen trees form occasional pockets of woodland in some areas, especially to the south. Small flowering shrubs are also common on the lower fellsides.   Mountain goats and wild sheep roam the valleys, along with small herds of deer and elk. The chain has a varied bird life after the monsoon season, with birds from across the continent migrating here to feast on the plentiful insect swarms as the streams and rivers swell.

Natural Resources

After extensive mining over millenia by generations of dwarves, there is not much left of value in the rock. What little useful mining can now take place happens deep underground, and avoiding crossing closed off older mines and accidental cave ins makes it dangerous work.
