Jeren Covewatch

Captain Jeren Inkeye of Covewatch (a.k.a. Patches)

Captain of the fourth Frostburn Class vessel, HMS Grusk during the End of Darkness Expedition.

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

Jeren's grandmother gave him the name Inkeye due to the patch of dark fur that surrounds his left eye. A jagged line of white fur runs up his right arm where he was injured while defending his ship in 260.

Personal history

A life at sea was always on teh cards Jeren. His father had spent his life at sea, transporting cargo up and down the west coast of Caresnas and Jeren was keen to follow in his footsteps from an early age. His father's ship, the Covewatch Trader, was known from Filishar to Pelimouth as a reliable vessel and Jeren dreamed of one day being it's master.
When Jeren was old enough to go to sea himself his father arranged for a position for him on another vessel so that Jeren wouldn't be treated favourably by crew hoping to gain an advantage. The arrangement was easy enough as the Covewatch Trader had taken on it's share of future officers in the past. Jeren proved to be hard working and capable enough in his role, and at the age of seventeen he was brought back to the Covewatch Trader to begin learning the ship and it's crew.   Jeren worked for his father for the next three years until an attack by an elven ship claimed his father's life. Jeren managed to rally the surviving crew and drive off the attackers before assumming command. There was little question of his authority on the trip back to Covewatch, but on reaching port several of the crew questioned whether he should command the ship going forward given his relative lack of experience. Jeren had been thinking the same himself, but Nevil of Pebble Cove, his father's second in command, convinced Jeren to stay the course. The dissenters were dismissed and Jeren continued to captain the ship.
For the fourth ship I think Covewatch would be best. The other two are due to have additional casters and warriors, but the Grusk has more crafters. We need someone who can keep them together in a crisis. Jeren's shown he can keep a crew together in a fight, even when they aren't trained fighters
In 260 Jeren was again obliged to protect the Trader from an elven attack, suffering a long cut that normally cost him his arm. While recovering and looking to get the Trader repaired Jeren discovered that his family's finances were in a far worse position than he had thought. It turned out his sister had borrowed heavily and had secretly used the Trader as collateral before falling behind on payments. With insufficient funds to repair the trader, and no way to continue without the repairs Jeren went to see the Renkart family who had made the loan to his sister. The Renkarts were open to negotiation and Jeran was able to ensure his crew's continued employment and an income for his family, though at the cost of the Trader and his command.   Now a captain without a ship Jeren was only to happy to sign up for the End of Darkness Expedition when a recruiter came to see if he was interested.

Personality Characteristics

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Jeren is far from the best at using the new tools and an Endless Glass for navigation. He can just about get his head around how it works, but his calculations usually end up going awry, so he leaves this task to his navigator as much as possible. Where Jeren excels is in reading the wind and currents, even in unfamiliar waters. He attributes this to his unusually sharp eyesight that lets him pick on wave patterns that show how the wind is changing and changes in the seabed are affecting the flow of water.

Patches
Jeren's skin reacts badly to the sea air which causes patches of his fur to fall out. While it causes him no small amount of discomfort he does have a potion he can take to control the condition.   Despite what many assume the nickname of Patches doesn't come from the patches of missing fur. He was labelled Patches for the same reason he was given the name inkeye.
Hats
As a lupine shifter Jeren has struggled with the hats favoured by Seamus Havendon for officers sailing under his command. No matter what he does Jeren just can't seem to get it sit right and stay on his head, so it frequently ends up getting worn at an odd angle whenever Seamus isn't nearby.
