Frostburn Class

This class of ship was developed based on learnings from the Curiosity, which itself was based on a design from before the Years of Darkness. Longer and narrower than their predecessor these ships were faster and easier to handle in changing conditions.   Initiallly four ships of this class were built, named after the adventurers who slew the white dragon Andaxius and thwarted a number of threats to the kingdom.
  • Viris.
  • Malkash.
  • Dass.
  • Grusk.
  • The ships were built to transport mercenaries and explorers to the east as part of the End of Darkness expedition.   Following an incident on the Curiosity when its Endless Glass was stolen the decision was taken to provide these ships with mechanical timepieces in addition to their glasses. There were more than a few mutterings about buying these intricate devices from the Ironhammer halls but such objections were overridden by the expedition leader.   Despite the vessels being built and supplied for a long voyage a variety of measures were put in place to reduce the chance of supplies becoming an issue. An attempted poisoning on the Curiosity led to the introduction of a water barrel enchanted to detect the presence of toxins. While some argued for that a way to remove toxins was more useful the additional cost was considered excessive for four vessels when the ship's healer/cleric should be able to remove any poison if they are aware of it.

    Propulsion

Like with the curiosity the Frostburn class have two masts with square rigged sails. Each mast supports multiple sails several of which extend wider than the hull of the ship. Additional angled sails are also fitted between the masts and the stern and bow. Improvements in the rigging and greater knowledge of how to handle ships with this complement of sails has reduced the problems with handling that were occassionally seen on the Curiosity.

    Weapons & Armament

Ships of this class are fitted with multiple ballista to help deter would be attackers, and each also has a recovered fire launcher. A platform on the foremost mast provides each ship's complement of archers an advantageous position for targeting foes on other vessels.   The mercenaries carried aboard provide support for any close quarters fighting, with any spellcasters placed under the command of the Ship's Forecaster.

    Fire Launchers
Developed centuries ago for the Maelstrom, these metallic cones launch blasts of fire. They were designed to be powered by banks of magic storing crystals but none of the crystals survived the years of darkness. Spellcasters on a ship are therefore tasked with providing power to the launchers.   In ages past warships would have multiple launchers, but the details of how to create them have long been lost. The ones mounted on this class were retrieved from wrecks under the sea. After scouring multiple wrecks only five functional launchers were found, with others stripped for parts. With more launchers than ships it was decided that one vessel should have two fitted. It was unanimously decided that it should be the Virris.
