Personal history

The third son of Baron Brian Havendon, Seamus spent his early years in relative comfort. However, with two older brothers Seamus had little chance of inheriting and the politicking between his older siblings caused more than enough trouble for the barony. After Seamus' father died his eldest brother Aaron did not want anyone else causing further problems so Seamus found himself learning about life at sea from the age of 12.   Placed aboard the Extra Coin, Seamus found himself in the care of Lewin Coates, a successful if not entirely honest ship’s captain. At Aaron’s request Seamus was assigned far more dangerous and menial tasks than was typical for someone of noble birth. It was no secret aboard the Extra Coin that Seamus was considered expendable, though outright violence against him was forbidden.   Despite the challenges Seamus managed to survive on the Coin for four years, learning what he could from the unscrupulous captain and crew. Having grown tired of his situation Seamus made contact with the authorities in Filishar and provided them with details of Lewin’s illegal trading along with a time and location they could catch Lewin in the act.   After Lewin was arrested and the Coin seized, Seamus found that he had drawn the attention of members of the royal court. Offered a variety of roles as a reward for turning Lewin in, Seamus choose to remain at sea and was given a position on the Bellatrix. Finally assigned tasks more suitable to his education and standing, Seamus was promoted several times and when the ship’s master decided to retire it was Seamus who benefited.   Seamus built a reputation as a reliable captain, capable of dealing with weather, monsters, and passengers with equal aplomb. This reputation earned him the opportunity to command the Curiosity during its expedition to chart a route to the east.
Following his successful return Seamus was offered a title and lands, but he chose to remain at sea. He was instead rewarded with promotion to the rank of Commodore and given command of the HMS Dass, first of the new Frostburn Class vessels, as well as being placed in charge of the fleet that would carry adventurers on the End of Darkness Expedition.
Knowing of Seamus' disklike of being less than perfectly dressed, KIng Nathaniel commissioned the Captain’s Sea Chest as a gift for him

Education

As a child Seamus learned his letters and the basics of arithmatic, along with limited amount of history. Once aboard the Coin he learned much of life at sea, though his education in skills such as navigation came from observation rather than being taught. He learned how to work out the position of the ship from the bearing of fixed points on land and many a stolen glance at Lewin's charts of currents and dangers allowed him to learn about the unseen forces acting on a ship.   Once posted a vessel whose captain took his responsibilities more seriously, Seamus was quick to expand his knowledge of keeping a log and how to assess and barter for goods.   While preparing for the voyage aboard the Curiosity Seamus spent many days teaching himself how to use the new navigational tools he had been presented with, there being no-one outside the elves who had used the recovered artefacts for hundreds of years.

Squinty
Years of peering off into the distance left Seamus with a perpetual squint. While never addressed as it to his face, the name Squinty had followed Seamus since his early days on the Bellatrix.
Well dressed
As a result of his noble upbringing, and his observations of the two different captains he had served under, Seamus was well aware of how ones attire could influence other's opinions. As as result he always took great care to be well presented, especially while at sea. He expected his officers to adhere to the same standards of dress which led to one of his lieutenants writing the Havendon Code.
