Covewatch

A fortified settlement to the north of Filishar established to prevent a repeat of the trouble at Pebble Cove.

Industry & Trade

Covewatch has become a hub for the sea trade in the northwest of Caresnas. Those from the nearby villages bring their goods to trade here, and larger merchant vessels carry goods between here and Filishar. Since the signing of the Anvilbright Accord Covewatch has also become the main port for trade between those of Clan Anvilbright and the Ironhammer halls.

Infrastructure

Covewatch was established as an outpost to provide a faster response to attacks on coastal settlements from the sea. Stone piers provide a place for larger vessels to dock and a small shipyard helps keep the ships stationed there in good repair. Since merchants won't let a good port go to waste a number of warehouses have been constructed which provide additional storage for those that find Filishar too expensive.   There's quite a variety of alehouses and inns dotted around Covewatch, with each catering towards different groups. By the docks the Laughing Merrow and Figgins cater to sailors, while near to the barracks the Troll's Head is used almost exclusively by soldiers. Locals favour the Anchor, and most travellers make use of Regin's Inn.

History

Covewatch was constructed after an attack on Pebble Cove. While the situation was dealt with by Frostburn company it was deemed unwise to rely on messengers being able to reach Filishar in time in the future, so a new outpost was constructed.
The memory of Frostburn Company is strong in Covewatch and the town square features a statue of those who saved Pebble Cove. The design of the statue is unusual as it depicts the heroes before they became famous
Originally a purely military outpost, the large port saw a certain amount of unofficial trade from merchants delivering supplies and after several petitions the Duke of Filishar permitted the construction of non-military buildings. The settlement expanded to become a walled town, though much of the population is soldiers garrisoned there.   The town was engulfed by the Unstoppable Invasion and changed hands many times during the war. Many of the original wooden buildings were destroyed during the conflict and after the war it was mandated that all buildings be built of stone or brick, with roofs to be made of tile.

Incomeless trade
The trade between the Anvilbright and Ironhammer dwarves brings in little coin to Covewatch directly. By the terms of the agreement with the Anvilbrights the goods are allowed passage through Caresnas but aren't tariffed as goods being traded within the kingdom. However, the ships supporting this trade bring in crews keen to spend money when they are allowed ashore and kingdom officials who monitor the trade bring in further golds.
Smuggling
The goods exchanged between the dwarven halls can fetch a hefty price in Caresnas, especially if the usual tariffs aren't included. Despite the best efforts of the royal inspection agents it is well known that at least some of the goods meant for one or other of the halls get mislaid in Covewatch. The punishments for those caught have gredually increased in severity over the years in an effort to deter the less dedicated smugglers.
