House Varwyck

House Varwyck are the Lords of Skalitz and Skalitz Viscounty, though mainly in name, as guilds largely run the entire fiefdom due to contracts and leases.

History

The name of the family was originally Varvich, and it was established in 741, being a family of Baronets who governed a remote village.   House Varwyck never actually had a Coat-of-Arms, but usurped its Coat of Arms from a family it married into, that then subsequently died out. The family, against etiquette, used the usurped coat of arms long before they technically had the right to do so, though since the construction of Skalitz castle, they've every right to which ever coat of arms they wish to use, that isn't in use by someone else.   The family fell on hard times in 1143, losing most of its holdings in the Sword-Coast region where the family had operated as merchants and scribes for some time, being recognized as little more than commoners.   House Varwyck was re-established in 1167 DR when the village or Rovna was founded, after the Lords of the Staglands determined that it would make House Ryker too powerful if they were given dominion over this village. The self-same lords realized it would look bad if they suggested one of themselves, so they chose the Varwyck family, which was meant as an insult to the Ryker family - that they would rather see a family of, quintessential pretenders, ruling Rovna than they would the Nightflowers.   The chagrin of the nobles of the lands, Varwyck soon established stellar relations with the Ryker family and the two houses became close allies, with many cross-marriages - it was clear that, at the time, House Varwyck was preparing to largely become absorbed by the Ryker family, but before that could happen, the seat of the Ryker family, Pribyslavitz, was attacked and subsequently abandoned and shortly after, Skalitz was under construction, and house Varwyck suddenly had the appearance of being one of the most powerful families in the Staglands - only in appearances, however, as Baldur's Gate more or less forced house Varwyck to sign so many contracts and leases with the mining guilds of Baldur's Gate that it would honestly be more appropriate to call them the Stewards of Skalitz - which many other nobles still do, as an insult.
