Government

The Great Sea Civilization operates as an oligarchy, with rulers from each of its sub-realms (Tritons, Merfolk, and Sea Elves) coming together to collectively govern and oversee the entire civilization that spans their domains.

Culture

Inhabiting entirely different conditions, the great sea civilization developed an advanced civilization unlike any other. They know the arcana of metalworking, utilizing them to forge swords, spears, axe-like weapons and helmets. The members of the great sea civilization are also fairly efficient masons capable of not only building cities but also vast steps which lead to them.   Sea people have liberal views when it comes to homosexual or non-monogamous relationships.

Military

Inhabitants of the southern ocean seem to rarely use weapons besides nets and trident and rely on the help of sharks, dolphins, hippocampi and gargantuan krakens in battle. Tritons are often trained to use tridents in combat.   The sea elves of the Gulf of Dragons adorn themselves in brightly colored armor, featuring striking streaks of orange and red. Although their armor does not provide complete coverage, it is large enough to emphasize their presence, serving a dual purpose of protection and intimidation.

Justice

Because of their history with Tromokratis, the act of recerence or devotion to Tromokratis, or any figure associated with him is illegal, and it is punishable by the banishement of the great sea civilization. In cases where the individual is found to be actively participating in a ritual for Tromokratis, the punishment shall be execution.

History

Genesis

In ages long past, the tritons launched an assault on the Sahuagin residing in what would later be termed the Tromokratis' Sea. The Sahuagin were shielded by Tromokratis, the Kraken, who obliterated the invading forces, exacting a heavy toll on the tritons in order to safeguard his devoted followers.   The tritons, facing the wrath of Tromokratis, fled for their life, following their king to the great ocean, south of the Dream forest. Together, they established a new settlement in the ocean, offering hope for peace to the Tritons. Faced with the overwhelming power of Tromokratis, the Tritons sought allies in the form of sea elves and merfolk, collectively forming the Great Sea Civilization.   The sea elves' initial decision to join the Great Sea Civilization was heavily influenced by their devotion to Jan'ahrem, the goddess of the sea. Jan'ahrem, perceiving Tromokratis as an untrustworthy entity incapable of upholding the values of the creatures residing within his realm beneath the sea, and she sought to assert her dominance over him. To achieve this, she recognized the necessity of her sea elves followers with the merfolks, and tritons. Through this alliance, Jan'ahrem gained the collective strength and determination required to confront and challenge the titan Tromokratis.   In the midst of the battle, as Tromokratis led an all-out assault against the united forces of the sea elves, merfolks, and tritons, the situation grew ever bleaker. Dragon turtles threatened the sea elves' capital of Vellamorn, savage Sahuagin armies clashed with the merfolk of the Gulf of mermaids, and the Titan Tromokratis himself descended upon the tritons, seeking to crush them.   It was during these harrowing moments that the Triton King, a valiant and noble leader, faced Tromokratis alongside champions of the sea elves and merfolk. Together, they harnessed the power of the magic-imbued crystal, determined to seal the Titan's might. However, in the epic confrontation that ensued, the Triton King made the ultimate sacrifice, giving his life to protect his people and seal Tromokratis' devastating power.   The Triton king death was deeply morned by his daughter, Morganyn to grieve deeply. From that day forward, a profound hatred for Tromokratis took root in Morganyn's heart, eventually driving her to become the protector of the coven crystal and the queen of the Tritons.

The Broken Vessel Conflict

A conflict rages on between the Merrow and the Great Sea Civilization, primarily centered around control of the territory known as the Diver's Grave . This once belonged to the Great Sea Civilization but is now under the dominion of Dahsilla, a formidable Sea Fury. The dispute over this strategic territory remains a source of ongoing tension and hostilities between these two underwater powers.

Pirate's crystal conflict

1135 AD through late 1136 AD   In 1135 AD, one of the three cloven crystals protected by the great sea civilization was stolen from the sea elves by Wellan. This led the tritons, merfolk, and elves to inspect every boat within their territory, hoping to find the pirates who stole their national treasure.   Learning of the ties between Wellan and the Longstraw Pirates, the great sea civilization declared them enemies of the nations and attacked pirates on sight.
This conflict took a turn for the worst when Tortuga Isle started to move within the great ocean, south of the Dream forest, prompting the tritons to attack the dragon turtle and the Kraken King to ripost with the power bestowed by Tromokratis. At least long enough to flee.
Marjani Flintwill Flintwill, a pirate from the longstraw pirate attempted to steal another cloven crystal, the one within Dashila's lair next to the merfolk's territory. Hoping to prevent another of their crystal from being stolen, the merfolk gathered an expedition to dive into Dashilla's territory and fight Marjani and her men. Wellan, who managed to hide his identity, offered to help, and betrayed the merfolk once in the presence of Marjani, helping her steal the second cloven crystal.
The death of Dashilla ends the broken vessel conflict, and allows the merfolk to regain their lost territory, however, furious about Wellan betrayal, and desperate after the loss of the second crystal, the great sea civilization started to send emissaries to the land above the water, prompting Tana's Empire, the Hobgoblin empire, and the Lightfoot Kingdom to send their ships looking for the pirates.   All accepted, threatened by the end of their maritime commercial roads if they refused.

The cloven crystal war

late 1136 AD   The Cloven Crystals, ancient seals binding the mighty Tromokratis, had fallen one by one. Either destroyed or stolen by the pirates of the Kraken King, their loss heralded the return of a monstrous force. Only one crystal remained, and with it, the last barrier to the Kraken King's dominion over the oceans. Queen Morganyn, its warden, stood as the final bulwark against his conquest.   A desperate war erupted as the Kraken King rallied the Longstraw Pirates, assembling a fleet of over twenty ships crewed by hundreds of bloodthirsty raiders. Their target: Coralia, the Triton capital, where the final crystal lay embedded within the queen herself. Morganyn, knowing the threat, sent her Triton warriors to meet the enemy on the surface, while Coralia’s plasmoid allies took charge of the city’s defense.   As fireballs and arcane barrages rained down from pirate mages, the battle raged across the sea. But among the pirates, not all were loyal to the Kraken King. A rogue ship, The Garrot, used the chaos to slip its own infiltrators into Coralia—Wellan, Rixa Rae Silver, Achuak, and Aryte.   Their mission quickly unraveled. Confronted by plasmoid defenders, they were forced into retreat, stumbling into the city’s portal to the Elemental Plane of Water. Dragged into its endless, crushing currents, they fought desperately to escape, but at a terrible cost—Achuak and Aryte perished. Rixa, shaken, chose to flee. But Wellan, sensing an opportunity, pressed forward.   Wellan, determined to reach the last crystal, devised a cunning ruse. Feigning grievous injuries, he allowed himself to be captured and taken before a Triton lieutenant, where he spun a tale of traitors within Coralia and a looming attack by another pirate faction, led by Katarina Nessi. His deception worked well enough to earn him an audience with Queen Morganyn and her war council.   While the queen remained wary, she could not afford delays. Choosing to imprison Wellan rather than execute him outright, she turned her focus to defending her city. Yet his words carried an eerie truth—Katarina Nessi’s fleet soon arrived, striking not from above but from below, as her shark-riding warriors launched an underwater assault on the palace.   In the ensuing chaos, Wellan seized his chance, battling Silvester, Katarina’s second-in-command, in a brutal confrontation. Though victorious, Wellan suffered severe injuries and barely escaped with the help of Tarek Harborlan, a pirate who had betrayed Silvester. Together, they hid in the city’s shadows, waiting for the opportune moment to act.   As the hours passed, the tide of battle shifted. The Tritons, forced to withdraw from the surface, reinforced the palace, pushing back Katarina’s forces. But this retreat allowed the Kraken King’s pirates to dive beneath the waves, preparing a new strategy.   Sneaking through the flooded streets, Wellan spied the Kraken King’s mages performing rituals—summoning dragon turtles to turn the tide of battle. Realizing the devastating implications, he rushed back to the palace while Tarek fled to the Garrot, following Wellan's instructions.   Wellan surrendered himself once more, warning the queen of the coming dragon turtles. Still deeply mistrustful of the man who had betrayed the merfolk, Morganyn hesitated. But with no better options, she made a desperate choice—she would flee Coralia, drawing the battle away from her people and buying them time to regroup.   Under the cover of night, Morganyn, her advisors, and Wellan escaped the palace, using magic to disguise themselves as jellyfish, then polymorphing into sharks to flee undetected. Their destination: The Garrot, the one ship that might offer them passage to safety.   Sam Bellamy, the Garrot’s captain, welcomed the queen aboard. In their council, Morganyn proposed they sail to the coast, where the pirates’ strength would falter on land. But Wellan had other plans.   Recovering from his wounds, he approached Sam in secret with a deadly proposition—kill Morganyn now, while she was at her weakest, before the tides could turn against them again. Sam hesitated, but ultimately agreed, as the queen death would grant Wellan higher powers, and slow the forces now searching for them and the queen. And so, aboard the Garrot, bathed in sunlight, Wellan and Sam invited the queen to a breakfast, the food and drinks spiced with a philter of love. The queen and her protector poisoned, Wellan struck the final blow. Morganyn fell, the last Cloven Crystal shattered, and with it, the final seal on Tromokratis was undone.

Titan wrath

late 1136 AD through 1137 AD   When Tromokratis was freed, the southern ocean erupted with a necrotic storm that raged for weeks. Enacting his vengeance, the titan began by laying waste to the Gulf of Mermaids, annihilating the merfolk who fled eastward in desperation, seeking refuge with their sea elf and triton kin.   In his fury, Tromokratis shattered Crackskull Pass—the vast mountain range that once connected the continent of Siniador to the Green Earth. This act severed one of the most vital land trade routes linking Tana’s empire with neighboring realms and triggered a massive seismic event felt across all of Toriel.   Seizing the chaos, the sahuagin who served Tromokratis expanded their territory, establishing dominion over the southern reaches of the newly formed Crystal Ocean. Sahuanoy flourished in the aftermath, while Tromokratis himself claimed dominion over all seas and oceans of Toriel, slumbering deep beneath the Crystal Ocean’s surface.   The great civilizations of the sea, already weakened by prolonged conflict with pirates, found themselves powerless against the titan’s wrath. Though they had fought valiantly to protect the world, no aid came. Disillusioned and weary of sacrifice, they chose exile over extinction. Following the path of the tritons—who had first escaped through a massive portal within their capital—they fled Toriel and reestablished their civilization within the Elemental Plane of Water.
