Alexstrasza Character in Toriel | World Anvil

Alexstrasza

Goddess of life

Alexstrasza the Life-Binder, is the guardian of all life in the world of Toriel. She was one of the five dragons, choosen by Bahamut, Sardior and Tiamat to become a divinity, and was empowered by them to protect life in Toriel.   Alexstrasza loves all living creatures and protects them, and only those who menace the Dragon or the world face her wrath.

Characteristics

Physical features

In her humanoid guise, Alexstrasza often appears as a high Elf with brownish red skin, Only her eyes remain unchanged from her dragon form. Her face appears rounder than any high elf's, almost as if mixed with Human traits. In this guise, the Life-Binder doesn't usually display much modesty in her choice of clothing, most often being dressed as a warrior maiden with intricate, colorful armor and a cloak resembling a membranous wing.

Mental traits

Compassionate and wise, Alexstrasza treasures life in all its forms. She firmly believes that few beings are truly evil and that even they are not necessarily beyond redemption, for change and growth is inherent in life. It can seek the light or the darkness, and it is only when it chooses the darkness so completely that life itself is endangered that there is no hope (as was the case with Zuth). The Life-Binder has always behaved with dignity, courage, grace, and compassion, even in the face of inconceivable horrors and deep personal loss.   She prefers peace and solitude, although she will defend her lands with all her power against any who threaten them without due cause. She often uses her shapechange power to appear as a creature of nature, in order to see what encroaching mortals will do before revealing her presence. Alexstrasza is devoted to all forests, and to a lesser extent all other types of green and fertile growing things. She considers all natural woodlands her home, and she need fear no beast within such lands. Some elven communities pay her homage. Druids of the wild, in particular, appreciate her serene presence, considering her second in importance only to Ysera.

Abilities

The dragon-goddess possess magics over all life. In the past, she has used great fire used to incinerate undead and rebirth fresh new life in their place. Cleansing the body in favor life anew is well within Alexstrasza's grasp. Among Alexstrasza's abilities, she can regrow forests and heal the land. She can animate the dead and resurrect them. The intense thickness of her scales causes any ordinary attack to bounce off, and she is rather agile in humanoid form.

History

Dawn of the Dragon Gods

In Toriel's ancient past, Alexstrasza, her brother Dralad, and her younger sister Ysera were the only three survivors of their clutch. Ysera was sick and smaller than average, and Alexstrasza watched out for her.   Alexstrasza was one of the more intelligent of her clutch and when one of her clutch brothers went missing, Alexstrasza searched to find him and met with Malygos. The two were attacked by a dragon afflicted by a disease but managed to fend off the threat, following this lead, the two dragon found Dralad, lifeless.   Like the other dragons of that era, Malygos would gather under the command of Talonixa to combat Zuth. Zuth, a primordial dragon afflicted by a disease, grew stronger with every dragon he consumed.   Alexstrasza knew that fighting was the only option, however, she vowed to not fight like Talonixa. When Ysera was given a chance to speak her idea of peace, Alexstrasza was worried about Talonixa's reaction. later when Ysera and Talonixa argued over the fate of those afflicted by the disease. Alexstrasza found herself agreeing with Talonixa over the issue, the afflcited would have to be quarantined or killed for the safety of everyone else.   As Zuth commenced his assault on the dragon army, the three dragon gods—Bahamut, Sardior, and Tiamat—observed the conflict with keen interest. In due Time, Malygos found his way to Alexstrasza and Ysera. Malygos afflicted by the disease briefly succumbed to the hunger for flesh, attacked Ysera. However, thanks to Alexstrasza's intervention, Ysera managed to snap Malygos out of his frenzy. Subsequently, Malygos was cured through direct intervention by Bahamut, who bestowed upon him a blessing against the disease.   Alexstrasza, Ysera and Malygos joined with Nozdormu and Neltharion, two other powerful dragon, to hunt Zuth once and for all. Forcing him to retreat in a cavern were all five dragon, except for Ysera, began the battle against Zuth, who had grown larger and even more mutated than before.   With a flap of wings, Zuth called up a massive wind that scattered the fighters. Ysera suddenly appeared and Zuth attempted to devour her, but Neltharion silenced his laughter with a mighty blow, pulled Zuth to the ground and began to mercilessly beat him even as Zuth began mutating further.   In the battle, Zuth ripped Neltharion lower jaw, Malygos moved to save him, examining the bloody mess as Zuth roared in triumph and grew ever larger. This bolstered the fighter, that, in a final attempt to protect everything they held dear, and blessed by the three dragon gods, banished Zuth from existence.   After such a feat, the five dragons were blessed with godly power and agreed to protect Toriel. By channeling the power of the three dragon gods, they were able to ascend to godhood themselves.

War of the Ancients

During the war of the ancients when the demons opened a portal to the material plane to allow their armies access to the world of Toriel, the dragon god congregated at the lair of Alexstrasza to discuss the coming invasion and what part they should play in defending the world. Neltharion proposed that to end the invasion of demons, the dragon gods should create a weapon with which they could eradicate the Demon armies.   All the dragon god contributed a bit of their power in creating the Dragon soul with the exception of Neltharion. Through the disk, Neltharion was able to magically take control of all other dragons including the other three dragon gods.   The dragon gods and their dragon kind flew toward the demon armies. The dragons awaited Neltharion's first attack. He grabbed the Dragon Soul and by channeling his destructive power through it destroyed thousands of demons with one swing of radiant Magic. The dragon gods watched in horror as Neltharion also killed some of their kind and other allies along with the demons.   The dragon gods tried to stop Neltharion. Silver dragons surrounded Neltharion in an attempt to take the Demon Soul from him. With a single command, they were engulfed by the magic of the Dragon Soul and were pulverized.   A swing of the Dragon Soul paralyzed all dragons and the dragon gods in mid-air, rendering them unable to move or speak. Neltharion then struck out at the dragon gods, scattering them far across the land. With the help of this power, he captured Alexstrasza.   Alexstrasza endured years of captivity under Neltharion's tyrannical rule, serving as his unwilling slave. However, the demons succeeded in stealing the dragon soul from Neltharion's hoard. In a desperate bid to distract the demons and reclaim the artifact, Neltharion devised a plan to relocate Alexstrasza, intending to subject her to further torment once the artifact was recovered.   Fortunately, intervention from the other dragon gods led to Alexstrasza's liberation. Additionally, the dragon soul was wrested from both the demons and Neltharion by Nozdormu. As a result, the demonic armies were swiftly defeated.

As a Dragon God

For a time following the War of the Ancients, Alexstrasza enjoyed a period of peace. However, as time passed, disagreements arose among the dragon gods regarding the most effective methods of sheltering and protecting the world.   The emergence of humans and other races instilled fear in many, leading them to advocate for the eradication of these new beings. Conversely, others believed in the importance of educating and guiding these fledgling races, teaching them right from wrong.

The Battle of Life and Death

In the Highlanders Mountains, Alexstrasza confronted Neltharion. After several minutes of battle, Neltharion and Alexstrasza fell towards the ground, this event is said to be the cause of the formation of the Insatiable Lake, clutched in each other's claws. Alexstrasza, exhausted and gravely injured, was found laying on the ground in her humanoid form, while Neltharion fell out of sight beyond the crest of the mountain.   Calen who likewise took elven form (who is Alexstrasza child), raced to his mother's side. Her voice wavered as she explained that the Earth Warder was dead. Like a phantom, the gigantic form of Neltharion rose up behind them. Calen exclaimed "he lives!" and the wounded Alexstrasza forced herself to sit up, stating that it was "impossible" for Neltharion to have survived the wounds she dealt him.   Neltharion set the ground at his feet aflame and glowered over the group. Calen moved to put himself between his mother and Neltharion, taking his true form again. But he was completely dwarfed by the Black dragon godly power. Realizing he stood no chance of defeating Neltharion, Calen darted back and forth, shooting fireballs, in an effort to distract him while Alexstrasza escaped. He later stated that this was a partial victory, as Neltharion was gravely wounded and would need to go into hiding to recuperate.
