Zuth Character in Toriel | World Anvil

Zuth (ZOOS)

Laws of nature are unavoidable, absolute, and eternal. What is born surely dies. For every balmy, warm summer, there is a chilling, cruel winter. Day invariably gives way to night. Above has below— its opposite. Black is parallel to white, and all that is good has an equal in evil. In short, each thing that exists has its direct counterpoint, a reversed mirrorimage that balances its place, and indeed its meaning, in the whole of existence.   All natural things have their respective opposites, except Zuth. Zuth is an ancient dragon that grew beyond the law of nature, transcending what's possible, creating a new force of nature. Zuth is ancient, it is enormous, and it is the ultimate expression of a dragon primordial power.

Characteristics

Mental traits

Zuth possesses non-verbal intelligence. It thinks only in images and only has the base emotions of an animal. Its communication is telepathic, expressing its will with imagery and emotional impressions. Often it is difficult to determine its exact motives and aims, as the images often have no context, leaving the guesswork entirely in the hands of those who receive the impressions.

History

Titan

Zuth is one of the very first dragons to have walked on Toriel, a primordial dragon, and direct creation of Bahamut, Sardior and Tiamat, devoid of intellect. During the initial generations of dragons, survival was a precarious struggle, and many viewed these primordial dragons as little more than beasts. However, Zuth, as one of the survivors from this era, underwent a transformation, becoming something altogether different—an anomaly within the world of Toriel.   Many compare Zuth to the titans, being so ancient it predates history and the creations of gods.

Dawn of the Dragon Gods

In Toriel's ancient past, dragon were among the rare species to dwelve this planet, and a disease afflectied them, turning them back to their primal state, with an unstoppable hunger for flesh, draconic flesh.   Zuth, afflicted by the disease, suffered from strange symptoms. Like other dragons, the disease induced a hunger for draconic flesh, but consuming the flesh of his own kind had a unique effect on Zuth. With each bite, he grew bigger, more powerful, and increasingly ravenous. Consuming many of his kin, Zuth continued to grow stronger and larger with each feast.   Zuth's immense size and power posed a significant threat to dragonkind. Under the leadership of the dragon Talonixa, the dragons began to plot against him. While many advocated for direct confrontation with the now colossal and formidable Zuth, others, like Ysera, believed that diplomacy and discussion were still viable options.   Conversely, some dragons viewed Zuth's transformation as a return to primal instincts—a natural evolution of dragonkind driven by an innate desire for power. As Ysera advocated for peace, suggesting that coexistence was possible, these dragons saw an opportunity and betrayed Talonixa, aligning themselves with Zuth.   Zuth devoured them all, growing bigger and stronger. Despite the overwhelming odds, the dragons banded together, forming an army to combat Zuth and his growing threat.   As Zuth commenced his assault on the dragon army, the three dragon gods—Bahamut, Sardior, and Tiamat—observed the conflict with keen interest. In due time, Malygos found his way to Alexstrasza and Ysera. Malygos afflicted by the disease briefly succumbed to the hunger for flesh, attacked Ysera. However, thanks to Alexstrasza's intervention, Ysera managed to snap Malygos out of his frenzy. Subsequently, Malygos was cured through direct intervention by Bahamut, who bestowed upon him a blessing against the disease.   Alexstrasza, Ysera and Malygos joined with Nozdormu and Neltharion, two other powerful dragon, to hunt Zuth once and for all. Forcing him to retreat in a cavern were all five dragon, except for Ysera, began the battle against Zuth, who had grown larger and even more mutated than before.   With a flap of wings, Zuth called up a massive wind that scattered the fighters. Ysera suddenly appeared and Zuth attempted to devour her, but Neltharion silenced his laughter with a mighty blow, pulled Zuth to the ground and began to mercilessly beat him even as Zuth began mutating further.   In the battle, Zuth ripped Neltharion lower jaw, Malygos moved to save him, examining the bloody mess as Zuth roared in triumph and grew ever larger. This bolstered the fighter, that, in a final attempt to protect everything they held dear, and blessed by the three dragon gods, banished Zuth from existence.
