County of Redstone
The County of Redstone is located within the badlands known as the Redstone Hills between the shires of Greenbrae and Oakfield. It is made up of steep, rocky hills and low mountains where the local Dwarves have dug numerous mines and quarries. The Redstone settlement is located outside of several large and very productive lead mines, while the Dunhill settlement is located outside of a very profitable silver mine. Both these mines are worked mainly by Dwarves of the Clan Redfist, with a total population of more than 5,000. The County Sheriff is Declan Miner, a Redfist Dwarf of 250 years that runs a safe and efficient county. The towns in his county are some of the most populous in the Ward, second only to Rolar itself. The county is patrolled daily by one of two companies of Guards that are barracked at each of the main mining settlements. These settlements have stone walls built 20’ high with square 30’ towers guarding a double gate. The roads of the towns are paved with the stone and gravel tailings from the mines, and much of the communities are constructed of cut stone from the many quarries scattered within the county.
Structure
The County of Redstone has to large towns, the Town of Redstone and the Town of Dunhill. Both of these towns are under the authority of the Sheriff of the County, Declan Miner, and each community selects an Alderman who assists the Sheriff in administrative duties when the sheriff is not actually in the town.
The Jermin Family of Dunhill is the wealthiest and most influential family in the southern half of the County, and they own the majority of the town of Dunhill.
Demography and Population
The Town of Redstone has a population of more than 3,000 souls, the majority of which are Dwarves. Of the 1,800 Dwarves, there are 1,100 sworn members of the Clan Redfist and just more than 700 Clan Hardhelm. There are just under 800 Humans residing in the town and about 400 Gnomes.
The two Clans of Dwarves do not get along with each other. Both are actively working to establish a permanent homeland for their people within the Kingdom of Cobal similar to what the Great Clans of Gorgomoth have established in the Kingdom of Aria, but the means and methods employed by each Clan are markedly different and seemingly incompatible with each other.
The Redfists as a group follow an agenda of self-determination and a live-and-let-live attitude towards other members of the greater community. They work tirelessly to make their collective dream of a permanent homeland for all Redfist Dwarves, but they do not actively interfer or assist other Clans while doing so. The Hardhelm Dwarves, especially those living and working in the Ward of Rolar, do choose to make efforts to hinder or openly oppose Redfist efforts, whether those efforts affect Hardhelm agendas or not. This dichotomy of agendas has created an atmosphere of tension and sometimes even open conflict between the two factions.
Territories
The County is located across the Redstone Hills that lay within the established territory of the Ward of Rolar. The region is mineral rich and has a wealth of metal ores, fine stone and high quality clay that is much in demand across the Ward and across the Kingdom.
Agriculture & Industry
There are several productive villages and communities that have sprung up along the Dunwash made up of mixed Human and Halfling populations that specialize in garden agriculture and fishing and that add a vital and profitable feature to the County's food production capacity.
The largest industrial operations within the County are the Redstone Mines in the north and the Jermin Hill Mine in the south, which collectively employ more than 1,000 souls and provide the economic drivers that keep the County a thriving place to live and work. In addition to the mines are many quarries of marble and fine stone, several timber harvesting companies and two very busy market hunting camps that help suppliment meat and hide needs within the County.
Trade & Transport
The County has a single navigable river flowing through it, called the Dunwash, that flows to the Rolar River near the Town of Belmar that is used for floating ores, stone and timber from the county to markets in the greater regional area. The waterfront along the headwaters of the Dunwash is not particularly large, but it is quite busy at all hours of the day or night. The Dunwash is reguarly dredged and its banks are routinely maintained so that river boats and barges can pass safely and efficiently up and down stream, day and night.
Infrastructure
Due to the impressive amount of heavy materials harvested and hauled across the County, roads are well designed, well built and well maintained. The finest and most effective roads connect the Towns of Dunhill and Redstone with the rest of the Ward. Bridges that cross waterways or chasms are typically finely finished stone structures designed to handle very heavy wagons and large teams of horse and oxen.
