Half-Elves are individuals of mixed ancestry in which one of their parents is Elven and the other of Mannish kind. Half-Elves must choose early in life whether they will be of mortal (i.e. Mannish) kind or immortal, of Elvish kind. If they choose immortality, they follow the lifestyle of the Elves. If they choose mortality they feel more comfortable living among Men than among Elves, particularly among High Men. Unfortunately, in many cases for the Half-Elf, this does mean that they typically do not grow up having both parents present.
Basic Information
As one might expect, Half-Elves are thinner than Men but stouter than Elves.
Civilization and Culture
Half-Elven names are generally determined by the parent raising the child. If the child is to be raised by their mortal parent, they are traditionally given a mannish name (unless the parent wishes to remember their love and give them an Elven name). If the child is to be raised by their Elven parent, they will be given an Elven name.
The culture of a Half-Elf truly depends on what culture they are raised in. However, a Half-Elf raised in Elven society is often looked down upon by full-blooded elves (particularly High Elves, but not so by Grey Elves). For this reason, many Half-Elves may grow up harboring resentment for their fairer half and end up choosing to live among Men later on in life.
All Half-Elves instinctively hate Orcs, whether or not they themselves have had any bad experience with Orcish kind. Also, it should be noted that all Half-Elves - but particularly those who choose to be of mortal kind - feel a strong affinity for High Men, since it is widely believed that High-Men as an entire sub-race have a touch of Elven blood in them. Half-Elves who choose mortality almost always live among High Men in their adult years rather than among Common Men, even if they grew up in a Common Mannish society.
