Grey Elves

Less tall and lordly than the High Elves, the Grey Elves are nevertheless more noble than the Wood Elves. They are a settled people that feel a kinship for the sea, earning them the moniker "Sea Elves." They have a gift for seafaring and shipbuilding, and a deep love for the sea. They often settle in towns and havens by the ocean. They lack their sylvan cousins' talent for music and they cannot match the High Elves' craftsmanship, but the achievements of their civilization are still the envy of mortal races.   They also have a reputation as the most sedate of the elven sub-races. They are less playful than Wood Elves, and less openly passionate than High Elves. Nonetheless, Grey Elves are capable of deep feeling, and it is said that once their emotions are aroused they are not easily shifted.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

While Common-elvish is the tongue easiest for man to learn, to the Grey Elves it is a primitive Elvish; lacking many of the salty flourishes that Grey-elvish does. In fact, Grey-elvish is more easily learned by Merfolk, Shuikmar, Sohleugir, and other sea-speakers due to the grammatical similarities. All Grey Elves also know, in a limited capaity, the third language variant of their kin, High-elvish.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

The Grey Elves are the most open and cooperative of Elves. They are great teachers and borrowers and have an interest in the works of all races. Grey Elves are a settled people and enjoy the company of others - they build towns and havens and gather in close-knit communities. Many Grey Elves feel a kinship to the sea; they build superb ships and are renowned sailors.   Of the three Elven races, the Grey Elves are the quietest and calmest, and appear to be the most content. They are less frivolous and playful than the Wood Elves and are less fiery and passionate thant the High Elves. In fact, it is this tranquility that allows Grey Elves to blend into mannish societies and others with such ease. Often is the case that when a Half-Elven child is born, one of the parents is a Grey Elf.

Common Myths and Legends

In the Champions of Old religious belief system, one member of this pantheon used to be an immortal, yet still killable, Grey Elf before ascending to godhood. Daldhren, Procurer of the Moons, is said to have infiltrated the Darkness and stolen Thoroth's moons, Uliev and Estrados, during The Severance. Daldhren kept them hidden and safe for the mortal world until after the battle was completed. Of the Champions, Daldhren is said to be the most cunning and fickle, and is the patron of many mortals who stalk in the shadows for their ill-gotten gains.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Grey Elves are the most open and friendly of Elven sub-races. No doubt, this is a direct consequence of their love of the sea, which takes them on travels to distant lands and brings them into contact with a wide variety of races. They get along with Men better than other Elves, and they are unique among their race in that they maintain friendly relations with Dwarves.   Grey Elves hold a tolerable disdain for Orcs, so long as they are amicable and respectful. Dragons, on the other hand, are still a hated enemy among all Elves.
