As their name indicates, High Elves are the noblest of all the Elven sub-races, the natural aristocrats of the Elves. They are great builders and unequalled craftsmen. They carry themselve with a proud demeanor that many take as arrogance.
High Elves often rule over societies of mixed Elven composition. Even if the only High Elves in the community are its governing class, Wood Elves and Grey Elves accept that it is their right to rule.
Basic Information
High Elves are the strongest and most sturdily built of the Elves. The burliest of their kind look more like High Men than like other Elves.
Additional Information
High Elves have iris colors ranging from white to yellow to greens and blues; and of course, they have those lovely pointy ears.
High Elves are more intelligent than the average human and able to retain memories longer, which is certainly needed when being immortal.
As with all elves, High Elves can see on a star-lit or moonlit night as if it were full daylight. In conditions darker than that, they need a light source to see, and their vision extends to 50 feet with perfect eyesight and 100 feet reasonably well. In absolute darkness, however, they can see no better than Men.
High Elves also have superb hearing.
Civilization and Culture
High Elves are traditionalists when it comes to naming their offspring, and find their Wood and Grey kin's choices of naming offspring after nature or the sea to be distasteful. High Elves relish in choosing names for their offspring that are difficult for mortals to pronounce correctly, as they are above them.
Example name choices include: Ceallomemah, Maoileidigh, Toghramasoss, Keyxisys, etc.
High Elves are monogamous for life (yes, this means forever).
They favor rich clothing and fine craftsmanship, and often have the appearance of great wealth.
Of all of the Elves, the High Elves are the most ordered. While their brethren are content to wander or mark time in quiet diffusion, the High Elves seek to build communities and states in beautiful, guarded places. High Elves feel entirely comfortable in cities, and sometimes build cities just for themselves. High Elves are often nobles who occupy prominent positions in mixed Elven communities. As such they feel a strong sense of responsibility for their fellow Elves.
Legends (theirs and others) speak of High Elves having a close relationship with the demi-gods, and that they still maintain ties to divine beings.
High Elves hate Orcs and Dragons, whom they regard as enemies since before The Severance. High Elves also have a special enmity toward Trolls. High Elves also treat all Men with at least a touch (if not more) of condescension, even High Men. High Elves do not acknowledge Dwarves as an intelligent race.
