The Wilderlands

North of the mountains, beyond the city of Gate Town lies a place known as the Wilderlands. As the name implies, this place is harsh and wild. It also contains a majestic, rugged beauty, and secrets that have been untouched since time immemorial.

Geography

The Wilderlands are dominated primarily by dense and vast temperate rainforests. Most of the land itself is shaped by rolling hills that occasionally rise into low mountains. Glacial lakes dot the countryside, and are exceptionally beautiful locations.   The region is bordered to the east by the Dawn Sea. The coastline is long and covered in treacherous rocks. It is bordered on the west and south by mountains, and to the north by the Great Tundra. The Wilderlands' beauty and majesty also makes it naturally close to the Feywild, infusing the entire region with fey magic.   The climate of the area is harsh and unpredictable. The summers are pleasant, but short, with long days and frequent rain. Winters are both long, and incredibly cold, with seemingly endless nights and vast amounts of snow.

Fauna & Flora

As the region is dominated by rainforests, life is both abundant, and varied. A great many species of tree grows there, to include spruce, aspen, maple and oak. A great many animals live there, such as wolves, foxes, bears, rabbits, and many more.   Due to the inherent magical energies of the area, magical creatures can be found in large numbers, as well. Owlbears, griffons, hippogriffs, and wyverns are found there in large numbers. The dense forests are also an ideal habitat for green dragons.   The Wilderlands are also very close to the Feywild, leading to a disproportionately high population of fey. Numerous archfey serve as enigmatic protectors of the wild places. Lesser fey, such as nymphs, dryads, sprites, pixies, satyrs, and green hags can all be found there.   A vast majority of the intelligent beings of the Wilderlands are orcs. These creatures are primarily raiders, living at war with the world around them. A very distant second is the humans of Eroch, living and feasting in their clans' mead halls. The remainder are primitive hunter-gatherer tribes, both human and goblin.

Natural Resources

As an uncivilized rainforest, the Wilderlands is an excellent source of both fur and timber. The locals only take what they need, and no more. This is due both to their practical nature as well as the powerful archfey that serve as the land's guardians.   Due to the presence of fey and the number of rare plants, the region is also a source of a great many magical reagents. Wizards have been known to hire adventurers to travel there to collect such materials. Since Mandian adventurers consider travel to Eroch and the Wilderlands as something of a rite of passage, most are all too willing to accept such work.
