Aljanni Desert
There is no denying that the "Desert of the Janni" is a harsh land. Even though one could stand in the middle of the dunes and see no life, the place is teeming with many beings both mundane and magical.
Geography
Even the vast and trackless desert has many faces. The northern area is covered in fine sand and endless rolling dunes. The southern regions are mostly flat scrub lands with rocks and brush littering the ground. In a few places, the harsh, barren terrain gives way to a fertile oasis with shimmering, clear waters and emerald palms.
As with most deserts, the entire region is defined by the lack of rainfall. Unlike most deserts, the Aljanni Desert is surprisingly cool, especially the northern reaches. Winters there are especially harsh for those who live in the area. The southern regions are uncomfortably hot to most travelers.
Fauna & Flora
Life in the desert is surprisingly diverse. Plantlife is naturally sparse due to the lack of moisture, consisting of rough grasses, cacti, and palm trees. Mundane animals include camels, elephants, armadillos, jackals, and wild cats. The mightiest of these creatures is the roc, a massive bird capable of carrying of an adult elephant.
Magical creatures are also very common, including behirs, nagas, lamias, and sphinxes. Both brass and blue dragons also call the region home. The most important variety of all these magical creatures are the various types of genies, who seem to be competing among each other for influence here for reasons unknown to mortals.
The primary sentient race are humans, comprising almost all of the population. Despite appearances, some of the nomads are not human, but jann. There are also some communities of goblins, as well.
Natural Resources
Both regions of the Aljanni Desert are almost totally devoid of natural resources. The primary export of Qandaq is gems, especially diamonds. It is unknown why these are so commonly pulled from the desert sands.
The main resource valued by the people of the desert is, of course, water. When an oasis is discovered, people of all kinds often flock to it. The Janni nomads will always move on, but Qandaqi often settle in such places, forming lasting communities.
