Andreggen

There is only one city in all the land of Eroch. This is Andreggen, and this is no city for soft nobles who love their cushy comforts. In Eroch, even their one city is rugged and wild.

Demographics

As with the rest of Eroch, the inhabitants of Andreggen are almost exclusively human. As it is common practice for southern adventurers to come to Eroch to fight orcs, half-breed residents exist but remain very rare.

Government

Andreggen exists as a meeting point for the Clanmoot, the gathering of the clan-fathers and clan-mothers of all the clans of Eroch. These individuals are technically the rulers of all of Eroch. In practice, each clan is fully independent and would spurn the rulings of the Clanmoot, even if they ever could decide on any rulings at all.   No clan has any influence on Andreggen at all. This means that the city has no government at all, and is effectively lawless. This does not mean that the city is a den of crime, however. Wrongdoing simply isn't tolerated by the citizenry, and even the lowest among them have the might to protect themselves.

Defences

Since the dawn of Erochan civilization, they have been in a state of almost constant war with the orc population. No matter how deep their hatred, and no matter how bloodthirsty their culture, no orc is stupid enough to attack Andreggen.   The entire city, with the exception of the shores of Loch Ander, is surrounded by a high timber wall and a deep trench filled with stakes. Archers from the walls are more than capable of fending off an orc horde. Barrels of water are kept on the walls to combat fire.   Even if the walls are breached, an invading force would not have an easy battle on their hands. The warrior culture of Eroch isn't as all-encompassing in the city as it is in the mead halls, but neither is it absent. Almost all not only own weapons and armor, but know how to use them. Most invading forces would quickly be overwhelmed. It is highly unlikely that a threat that serious would even get that far due to the intervention of the Coven of Crow Maidens.

Industry & Trade

Andreggen provides for the needs of all the outlying mead halls. The farmers and herders provide most of the food that keeps them alive. All of the clans' weapons and armor are, likewise made by blacksmiths and armorers in the city.   As the only true settlement in Eroch, the city also serves as a center for the little trade that exists with other nations. The city receives a great deal of iron for its forges and exports a great deal of mead from the halls of the clans. This trade flows along a mostly overgrown road that leads from Andreggen to Gate Town.

Infrastructure

While the city lacks luxury, it does have many of the amenities that other cities do. Taverns are especially common due to the boisterous Erochan lifestyle, and inns are common due to the prevalence of travelers.   The city's basic needs are also well provided for. Plenty of farms and pastures exist just outside, and a nearby lake provides drinking water and fish. A wall surrounds the city that is impressive in size and durability, despite its wooden construction.

History

The history of Andreggen is the history of the Clanmoot. When the exiled mercenary companies started becoming the clans of Eroch, they found that they needed a place to meet. Unable to decide on a clan hall to host it, they required a neutral location and decided on a circle of unspeakably ancient standing stones deep within the wilds near Loch Ander.   A lodge was built near the stone circle, and then a smithy. The city started to grow around that, slowly at first then quickly as it became apparent that the people needed safety in numbers. Eventually, the small community grew into a modest city.   Andreggen was attacked by orcs many times at first, but each attack was fought off easily. Only once did the city face a true threat: Ansarien Ill'conter. When he attacked Andreggen, he faced the combined might of the clans of Eroch, led by Alda MacRaine and rebels from Mandia, led by Eldain Mal'atre. Before the battle, an impassioned speech by Eldain led to the rebellion of many of the Sentinels of Iv'arill, Ansarien's most valued supporters. This led to him being easily routed.   Andreggen had stood undisturbed ever since, seemingly symbolic of the steadfast and unchanging nature of Eroch, itself.

Architecture

The construction of Andreggen's structures mirrors that of the many mead halls that dot Eroch. They are made from vast amounts of local timber. The ceilings are heavily slanted, to prevent the build-up of heavy snow and covered in wooden shingles.   Almost every building no matter the purpose is also very heavily decorated. Intricate knotwork covers the lower half of the buildings, while the ends of the roofs are carved with elaborate images. Imagery involving fearsome beasts is most common, especially dragons and owlbears.

Geography

The Clanmoot is not only the spiritual center of Andreggen, but the literal, physical center, as well. As the city grew it grew around it in every direction. The city also features a total lack of city planning, leaving no districts to speak of.   The city borders Loch Ander, a large, clear lake. It is surrounded by a large wall with many farms just outside. Right outside those carefully cultivated fields and pastures lies the same sort of dense temperate rainforests that cover the rest of the surrounding area.
