Alda MacRaine

Very few stories of Eldain Mal'atre are truly complete without mentioning the love of his life. This woman was Alda MacRaine, who legend paints as a warrior-princess from a harsh northern clime. The truth is both so much less and so much more.

Physical Description

Body Features

Alda was renowned for her athletic ability, which manifested in a very well-toned physique. She was also a great beauty, with light freckles, sharp green eyes, and a mane of fiery red hair. She possessed numerous, yet not disfiguring battle scars.

Apparel & Accessories

As with all Erochans, Alda preferred practical clothing. She wore simple clothing under plate mail. Her outfit was accompanied by the red and blue plaid traditional of Clan MacRaine. In battle she wielded a broadsword and sturdy oaken round shield.

Personal history

Alda MacRaine was born in Eroch, in the mead hall of her clan. Her father was the clan-father of Clan MacRaine, and her mother part of a political marriage. She was captured by orcs shortly after the birth of her daughter.   Even considering the influence of her father, Alda's early life was far from happy. At the time, Erochan women had no rights, and the daughter of an influential clan-father had far less freedom. She had a bad past and no prospects for a better future.   She did have one relief, however. She would watch the warriors of her clan train in the day and practice with a sword in secret at night. When a group of armed strangers came to the clan's hall, she had idle fantasies of joining them, but knew them for the silly dreams of a child.   Their leader, Eldain Mal'atre was an elf, and thus didn't need sleep, so after waking from the elf-sleep he walked the quiet mead hall and found Alda training. After speaking with him they found he had a great deal in common with her, understanding what it was like to be held back by others.   At Eldain's encouragement, Alda carried out the rite of passage for the clan's warriors. Her father was angry, and ordered his guests to bring her back. Eldain chose a loose interpretation of his instructions and decided that they would return her after her rite of passage.   The rite tested her wits, endurance, and resolve, but she succeeded. As with all of the warriors that came before her, the Lady of Mists appeared before her. Unlike most of the others, she gave the rebellious young woman her blessing, only given once in a generation.   Despite her sacred blessing, her father was absolutely furious. He banished the meddlesome adventurers from his hall, and declared that Alda would never leave it again. When the party left, the young woman escaped the hall and followed them.   The adventurers were very welcoming, most of them being outsiders in some way, themselves. She quickly grew very close with them, especially Eldain. The wizard had a bad habit of neglecting his sword training, so Alda was very insistent on working with him.   Their relationship only grew, although neither truly understood their own feelings. That changed after a fateful encounter with orc raiders left Eldain nearly dead. His body was healed, but his soul was trapped in a state between life and death. Alda sat by his side for days, worrying while he took a journey inside his own mind. Before he woke, they truly discovered their love for one another.   The lovers stayed by one another's side through many adventurers with countless dangers. They even traveled the Planes together. After they returned, they discovered Ansarien Ill'conter had taken over Mandia and had his sights set on Eroch.   While they rallied the Erochans, it was revealed that Alda's father had died and Clan MacRaine was considering electing her as Eroch's first clan-mother. As the crowds argued and shouted, Alda grew worried that she would be chosen and that her life would never again be her own. While they were on a balcony overlooking the hall, Eldain held her close. He cast his first spell of the 9th Circle: Time Stop, allowing the two of them to share a moment's peace while her clan fought below.   While she was not chosen to lead her clan, all of the clans of Eroch rallied around her. She led the charge against the mad elf's forces in the Battle of Whiteriver while Eldain confronted the man, himself. When he and his wizards fled, Eldain and his wizards gave chase. The portal closed inches from a sprinting Alda.   In the end, Eldain was victorious and returned a hero. They both remained together in the years that followed, rebuilding life in Mandia and protecting the Twin Worlds from apocalyptic threats. She died peacefully in her bed in Whiteriver at the age of 78, looking into the eyes of her elven lover.

Social

Family Ties

Of her family, Alda only knew her father, who she had a very hostile relationship with. Despite her emnity with her father, she was deeply proud of her clan and continued to act in their honor even after being effectively disowned. She eventually discovered that her half-orc companion, Naelon was her half brother. At first she was horrified, but she did learn to accept him as kin, and was deeply moved by his death.
