Dawn Sea

The largest ocean of Amaun, the Dawn Sea has served as not only a barrier for trade, but as method of travel, as well. Of course, the ocean has a life of its own deep beneath the waves, all but unknown to those above.

Geography

On the surface, the Dawn Sea appears to be an endless, trackless ocean. However, beneath the waves there are mountains, canyons, and forests just as there are on the surface. There are even portals to the Plane of Water scattered throughout, mostly in remote, forgotten places.   The waters are divided primarily based on depth. The shallows are bright and warm, with the sun shining during the day. The depths are always dark and cold. The deep waters mostly have a natural proximity to the dark energies of the Shadowfell.   The weather on the Dawn Sea is known for being primarily peaceful, but still prone to extremes. Calm waters can easily give way to a raging storm or a rogue wave. The wind could even die completely, leaving a ship becalmed without warning.

Fauna & Flora

An ocean so vast is bound to have a wide variety of life. Just as the plants and beasts of the land vary by location, so too do the Dawn Sea's life.   On the costlines, creatures such as crabs, sea birds, seals and young sea turtles are a common sight. More fantastical creatures such as sirens and selkies are also sighted, a source of a great many sailors' superstitions.   The creatures of the shallows are mostly peaceful. Whales and dolphins are the most dominant, but a wide variety of fish jellyfish, and other creatures reside there. Many magical creatures exist there as well, such as hippocampi and nerieds.   The depths are home to many far more fearsome creatures. The mundane creatures that live there, such as fish often live by luring other fish to their doom with the promise of light. Other magical creatures, such as morkoth and eyes of the deep do the same. Of course, the most fearsome of these is the mighty kraken, just waiting for their chance to rise up and dominate those above.   The Dawn Sea is also home to a great many intelligent creatures. The shallows are inhabited by merpeople, sea elves, and mactirin. While the depths are home to the kuo-toa, sahuagin, and tritons.

Natural Resources

The ocean serves as a reliable source of food for all those who live near and within it. Drylanders pull fish and other seafood from the waters, while ocean dwellers primarily farm both livestock (such as tuna), or edible aquatic grasses and seaweed.   The peoples under the waves mostly lack metal, for a variety of reasons. The first is that carrying too much heavy metal makes swimming difficult. Another is that metal is practically impossible to work in an aquatic environment. They make up for this lack by making arms and armor from treated bone and chitin. Such things aren't in heavy demand on the surface.   Many undersea plants, as well as the parts of oceanic creatures serve as magical and alchemical reagents. These are highly prized among drylander mages due to their rarity. The niche market makes regular trade of such things practically nonexistent, however.
