Seeing Bertrand Volksmann for the first time you might think he’s a bit young to be a bank manager, or a leader of a crime syndicate, and you’d be right. He is a bit young to be those things, but he is both of those things. He inherited both positions from his father, when he was assassinated by hit men from The Index.
Bertrand is the current leader of the Minoan Bankers Union, which means he officially is the manager of Senior Citizens Savings and Loans, the front for the Union. Since he is Minoan he is breaking the law by being a bank manager, but that is the least of his problems. He is mostly worried about how to get rid of his acne and to go through his Age of Consent Ritual without getting assassinated.
He has arranged to steal a cloning pod, and place his DNA template in it, along with a Core Dump unit, as life insurance. He can't buy one, since the company that manufactures cloning technology, Dioscuri Tech, is run by Bertrand's great uncle Isaac Volksmann. Isaac is allied to hos brother Jozef, and thus wants Bertrand dead, so he’ll put a stop to any attempt by Bertrand to buy cloning equipment from his company.
