Wurzeldorf
The First City
Known historically as the first city, Wurzeldorf is where society began rebuilding after the Great Catastrophe. For this reason it's also known as Cradle. While most of its inhabitants are found within the walls of the city, the relative safety of the past century has seen people building their homes outside the walls.
Culture
Festivals & Holidays
Wurzelhavians celebrate Erinnerung on the first week of every year. The festival is a reminder of how their forefathers came together to rebuild civilization, and worked together as one for a brighter future. The celebrations include music and dancing, theatrical reenactments of historical events, competitions and games, and most of all, drinking and feasting. The festival itself is less than a hundred years old, but has roots in similarly themed new years celebrations on much smaller scales.Religion
There is a single temple in Wurzeldorf, dedicated to the forest god Elan - the only known god residing near Wurzeldorf, in the deep of the woods. Wurzelhavians, particularly hunters, foresters, lumberers, and adventurers, pray to Elan for a good hunt or for protection whilst travelling through the forest. It's not uncommon for someone to leave offerings at the temple, or at shrines near the forest edge. The worship of other deities nad powers also exist, but is much less prominent, and usually on a personal level.Demographics

Government
Wurzeldorf is governed by a council. The council traditionally consists of six members: One for each heritage that makes up the population of the city.
Law & Order
The city has official guards that are there both to keep the people safe from outside threats, as well as uphold the law. They have their headquarters and barracks by the city square, with a small prison nearby as well. In most cases it's up to the captain of the guard to decide on the punishment dealt to the criminal. The most common punishments are fines, prison, and shaming. In severe cases, flogging or maiming could be used, and very rarely, even executions. For disputes, the city council hears each side, and decide on a solution. Then the guard enforce their ruling. Failure to comply with the council's decision will result in punishment.Crime
Wurzeldorf is a city built on centuries of people coming together and helping one another. Because of this, very little crime exist, but that is not to say it's nonexistant. The most common crimes are breaking the peace and theft. Other crimes rarely occur.Defences
The city has palisade walls surrounding it. There is no threat of war, but the wilderness is full of dangerous creatures, and the city has had to defend itself many times throughout history, with the wall being a very effective way to do so.
The defensive wall has 13 towers in the wall, each manned by guards keeping a lookout for threats.
There are a total of seven gates, each of which consists of a set of large, wooden doors that can be barred from the inside.
The city hall is a fortified stone structure originally created to keep the people safe from not only the elements, but also powerful monsters.
Industry & Trade
There are no mines for extracting metals, but Wurzelhavians instead salvage metal objects from ancient ruins in the area. Items brought back to the city are either used as is, or melted down for their metal. With the closest ruins emptied decades ago, and the dangers associated with exploring them, metals are highly valuable materials.
Wurzeldorf does trade with the nearby cities of Schutzstadt and Blumenstadt.
History
After the Great Catastrophe, survivors came together and built makeshift shelters to protect themselves from the elements. When bloodthirsty creatures attacked, they made a fortress of stone to protect themselves. Surrounding this building they made a village, which eventually grew into the city it is today. This first building still stands, and is now used as the city hall.
Monster attacks have steadily declined throughout the centuries, and for the past hundred years it's been relatively safe to live outside the walls of the city.
The Emigration
While various monster attacks was a constant threat and reality throughout the dark period that was the first millennium, in 782 a large scale goblinoid attack decimated the people. Although the Wurzelhavians won the battle, many people died, many were injured, and several bloodlines were ended. Feeling unsafe, a large percentage of the population left Wurzeldorf in the hope of finding a safer place to live, eventually founding Schutzstadt.Architecture
Houses in Wurzeldorf are made in the wattle and daub method. While most houses are white, some are painted up in vibrant colours.
A few buildings take exception, and are instead created from stone or full timber, but they are few.
Geography
Wurzeldorf was built in a large forest clearing, slowly expanding and deforesting its immediate surroundings. The forest still surround it on all sides, only a few kilometers off. A river runs past the city to the north, flowing from west to east.
Natural Resources
The city sustains itself on farms producing a multitude of foods, including horseradish, potatoes, wheat, rye, onions, tomatoes, carrots, garlic, and more. There's also livestock in the form of cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, and honeybees. Salt is gathered from a salt mine to the southwest.
Being surrounded by forest, the city has a rich supply of lumber. The forest is also rich in game of different kinds, making the hunting trade an important part of the city's resources.
