The Trierarchy of Heaven

Long ago, during the creation of the world, there were many gods and goddesses. They naturally arose out of the Void, bolstered by a force unknown to the small minds of mortals. They were created to sort the chaos of the Void and bring it infinite beauty and complexity. Their true names are hidden, and all we know of Them is based on their titles.   But within a short period of time, after creating the oceans and continents that would form Daganti and the rest of Orkanis, they clashed. A few of them had gone mad in their lust for power over the world. Their gigantic wills had created monstrosities and nightmares, things that still stalk the ruined wastes or darkened caves of the world. For their betrayal of the will of creation, they were banished to oblivion. Their real titles were forgotten, replaced by unspecific titles. They became the Chained Ones.   The creation of the world continued, much simpler now that the Chained Ones had been banished from the world. Mortals first began to walk the earth, their societies developed. Some gods patronized these races, the lar and the non-lar alike, while others helped all of creation in other ways.   But the power of the Void tempted some of the gods, and they went down into the Void to learn its secrets. These secrets made them cruel, or jealous, or mad. They became the Corrupted Ones, and their powers went from helping creation to hurting it. They twisted the peoples of the world against one another, and families against one another, and started what became the First War.   The Corrupted Ones lost the Battle of Rosanri, leading to their defeat. While some continued to exist and plague the lar, many faded into obscurity or died entirely. Some of the remaining gods, who became the Free Ones, were also killed, or weakened temporarily by the conflict. From that, the religions and temples of the world arose...

The Pantheon of Orkanis

The Trierarchy of Heaven is the way that the religions of Orkanis denote the three kinds of gods. The name comes from the fact that there are three major distinctions; the Chained Ones, the Corrupted Ones, and the Free Ones. As new races arrived on Orkanis or their gods became more widespread, they were retroactively added to the above categories.   The Chained Ones are the two (or three) deities that attempted to plunge the world into chaos, and their worship is very rare and expressly banned.   The Corrupted Ones have some following, but they are often referred to as "cults" rather than religions. They represent the sins and evils of society, although some of them fulfill a grey area more than a strictly evil role. Their worship is also banned by law, but they may be tolerated in certain contexts.   The Free Ones are the "good" gods and goddesses. They were responsible for the Great Sundering and the preservation of the world through the betrayals of the other two kind of deities. Their worship is highly encouraged and Their temples can be found in any major city.

Chained Ones

  • Tharis'duran, the Chained Fire. Believed to be hidden in the depths of a volcano, this figure is a being of raging flame and magma. His stirrings bring earthquakes and forest fires.
  • Tharis'ala, the Chained Ocean. Believed to be hidden in the depths of a deep ocean trench, she is a being of rapids and storms. Her fitful sleep brings hurricanes and tropical storms.
  • Tharis'xar, the Chained Darkness. The belief that she is real is not well documented, but many believe she does. She may be either free or chained deep in the Dark Hollows. Her steps bring poison and her minions are made of fungi and venom.

Corrupted Ones

  • Coltris, the Raging. He is the god of storms and thunder, and he brings storms and anger wherever he goes.
  • Valkar, the Secretive. He is the god of secrets and darkness, and his followers kill and maim to keep their promises.
  • Woldmir, the Trickster. He is the god of jokes, tricks, and swindling, and he forces people to laugh or commit crimes for fun.
  • Yanüs, the Dead. She is the goddess of the dead and the undead, and her blessing causes the dead to walk again.
  • Galkhkora, the Mistress of War. She is a goddess among the urukani who venerated her for her prowess on the battlefield. Her followers are now warmongers and depraved barbarians, and so she is considered Corrupted.

Free Ones

  • Seshani'er, the Star Mother. She is the goddess of the sky, the stars and the moon, and the most important goddess among the caldilar.
  • Pa'ilver, the Magic-Weaver. He is the god of magic and healing, and He is the creator of the grakonlar and the vileshlar.
  • Getranus, the Trader. He is the god of trade and messengers, and well-loved among the tepilar.
  • Qua'omë, the Parchment-Bearer. He is the god of knowledge and education, and it was He who brought language to the world.
  • Vasil'har, the Lord of Smiths. He is the god venerated by craftspeople and tradesmen all over Orkanis.
  • Ala'inwë, the Sea-Shaper. He is the god that presides over the rivers, streams, lakes, oceans and seas of Orkanis.
  • Beri'ways, the Forest-Green. She lords over the forests and jungles of the world, and She is the great goddess of the berilar.
  • Zëga'coldar, the Plains-Ranger. She protects the fields, glens, and steppes of the world, and She is the great goddess of the zëganilar.
  • Xartas, the Darkened. She is the ruler of the caves and caverns underground, and She is the most important goddess of the xertilar.
  • Filarwë, the Sword-Swinger. He is the patron god of warriors and heroes, and He is well-loved by soldiers and weaponsmiths.
  • Mordarin is the great god among the weddelar, but those who work in mines, dungeons and other dark places often make a prayer to Him.
  • Megliai is the patron goddess of the otraylar. She represents the protection of the oppressed and the gift of prophecy to other races.
  • Ro is the patron god of the Darukhasi, but his worship is rare outside of that race.
