the Dark Hollows

The owners of every weddelar mine worry that one day they will dig too deep. Their caverns go deep into the earth, but they seem to hold back. When asked, they shiver and tell terrible tales of what lies beneath Orkanis: the Dark Hollows. This underground realm of poison, darkness and fear seems to make one's nightmares feel tame by comparison. You'd better hope that you never find this out first-hand.

Labyrinthine Caverns

A thin layer of dark blue-black obsidian is often the first warning signs to a mining operation that they've gone too close to the Dark Hollows. Breaking this warning layer often leads to opening into a large cavern, which is apparently very common at this depth underground. This cavern will immediately make it clear that it is no mere empty magma chamber; brightly-coloured fungi grow on the walls, and terrible things scuttle just out of the reach of lantern light...

Terrifying Fauna

The real danger of the Dark Hollows is the wildlife that lives here. The creatures here hunt anything that moves or breathes, and they will stop at nothing to infest yet more caves in the tunnels and mines above. Most of these creatures have hundreds of legs, tentacles for eyes, or some other bone-chilling characteristic that would terrify any person living at the planet's surface. Even more terrifying are the things known as Mushroom Folk, whose usage of chemical spores has led to the enslavement or death of hundreds of miners. Or worse, the creatures that no one has ever seen...that is, until it gets you.

Locations Touching the Dark Hollows

The oldest underground settlements of the weddelar have stories of desperately clogging up the invading evils of the Dark Hollows, but that doesn't mean that don't know where the entrances to this realm are. The ancient city inside Mount Wishbourne has several such entrances, which is why all attempts to rehabilitate even a small portion of the ruins has always ended in death to all settlers. A cavern recently breached in Kharesh contains mushroom and fungal life that resembles the tales of the Dark Hollows, and it is very carefully watched by the city guard and any miners that plumb its depths.
