Otraylar

You arrive at the edge of the Grey Devastation very early in the morning after having set out from the Keeps of the Cyclopes. At this point, the kind darukhasi guide that you picked up in Alkahar leaves you, and you pass into the care of another. You don't see the new guide, so you trust the Star Mother that they'll show up soon.   You wake up that morning to find a large grass-coloured rock near your other travelling companions. It has two large packs lying next to them, and you wonder who they belong to.   You don't get to wonder long as the rock springs up as you stir and stretch your still-tired arms. It nearly approaches your height, which is the realization that causes you to be taken aback. It is also covered in fur, which has a greenish hue to match the surrounding terrain. It's face is pointed and covered in small, smudged black lines. It grimaces and yawns in the morning light.   One of your Kaharian companions leaps up and goes to grab his spear, but the newcomer puts out his hand. "I apologize for startling you. I am Draklari, your new guide to the lands of my people." He grabs one pack and hefts it over his fur-covered shoulder, and hands you the other. It is extremely heavy, and you even have difficulty carrying it despite your great strength. "We'll need these soon when we get to the lava fields." Your Kaharian friend gulps, and you begin to wonder if this was such a good idea after all...

Appearance

The appearance of the otraylar will depend on their ethnic background. The otraylar have in common their pointed faces, which remind many people of smeloplar, as well as their strange skin colours.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

Every single family group of goblinoids (called a house) is a large political faction in any goblin-run city. Many of the houses outside of the otraylar homeland wield significant power, although their race often gets them segregated to the slums or poorer parts of a town.   The Golden Eye of Megliai is the go-to organization for the welfare of goblins, as well as the main guard for the nobles of goblinoid society.

Beauty Ideals

Tattoos and face-paint are heavily worn by goblinoids, who use it to signify houses, affiliations, and even moods. A goblin without them is questioned, although never considered an outcast. The otraylar nature has also given them a love for wealth, and those who can afford it love to show it off. Whether that be through bright clothes, shiny buttons, or jewelry, they enjoy having an outward sign of prosperity.

Gender Ideals

Most otraylar houses are led by a matriarch, with a patriarch being permitted only if the other female members of the house are much younger than him. As such, otraylar usually look to the older women to lead the house, and the men often are left with the hard work of keeping the village alive as farmers and tradespeople.

Common Etiquette Rules

Among the otraylar, it is considered incredibly rude to refuse a bit of face paint or a small tattoo in the case of friends.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

The otraylar take the raising of young as a very serious affair. In the cave systems that are often their home, they set aside what are called "nursery caverns" for the education of children. This education is focused on the cultural rules and norms of their society, as well as pinpointing goblins with magical talent.

History

No one truly knows where the otraylar come from. Their own myths say that Megliai created them from the lush green earth of the forest that predated the Grey Devastation, and Xertilar that came to inhabit the Ashkeep Mountains would confirm the existence of this forest. But even the rather docile otraylar of the forest were visited by a fiery cataclysm that wiped out many of their kind not long after the Great Sundering, leading to great travelling bands that went all over Sedesta.   Following that, the growing power of the grakonlar Barons of Shakida soon laid claim to the wastes, even though the otraylar had just begun to reform their society around whatever good farmland was left. This led to a large scale conflict that brings out the great heroes of otraylar society: Waltar Fodo, Jirt Grublu, and their commanders and followers. Following this, the Great Goblin Nation was established.   It would last an entire era, holding off invasions from the north and east until peacefully joining the United Townships of Britaxia at the end of the Third Era. From there, it has become the main source of precious metals and its chief export, the specially-prepared volcanic glass named for the otraylar, has made Britaxia very rich.

Historical Figures

Waltar Fodo and Jirt Grublu are considered two of the major figures in otraylar history. Both great revolutionaries and powerful magicians, they have always embodied the magical spirit of Megliai for their people.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The otraylar have a very long history of mistreatment by other races, and so they are often persecuted wherever they go. Even the organized goblin-led societies of the Grey Devastation are often treated as "lesser" by many races, especially the ibelilar.
