The Weathered City
This event triggers whenever the players return to Hazegate after completing both the Demon in the Mine and Pesky Bandits quests.
During the time the party was away, Hazegate came under attack by a hoard of demons. Though it were mostly lesser demons who are relatively weak, their large numbers proved to be a challenge to the garrison of the city. Most demons were slain, but not without losses on the guards' side. Some of the creatures managed to get up on or past the wall, either by climbing or using flight. Luckily none but a few civilians were killed.
The demons attacking the city were mostly feral demons, of plenty of types. It seems that they were led by a Nycaloth, explaining the degree of organization between the demons. The Nycaloth was eventually slain when it landed in the square in an attempt to open the gate from the inside.
When the party nears Hazegate, they will notice the corpses of dozens of demons laying around. Most of them are shot dead by arrows. Nearing the city, they see a group of guards killing off a struggling demon. One of the guards gets fatally wounded during this encounter. Entering the city, the square near the eastern gate has blood on it. There are corpses of guards and one or two civilians laying on the ground, covered by cloths. Some guards carry off corpses to the field next to the other side of the city, where a cemetery lies past the walls. There are some children crying near a few of the corpses. On the far side of the square lies the body of the Nycaloth. It has two deep stab wounds in its sides, caused by Gilbert Boarhead and Regus Strongarrow together in a rare bout of cooperation between the two.
In the center of the square stands the guard captain, issuing orders to some of his men. As the party crosses the square, Gilbert will call out to them informing the party that Regus Strongarrow wishes to see them. The huntsman captain is in the Hunting Brigade Quarters and the players are urged to go there as soon as possible. Once having arrived at the headquarters of the hunting brigade, the players may speak to Regus. The man will ask if the party members were indeed the ones who accomplished either the goal of the Demon in the Mine quest or the one of the Pesky Bandits quest, whichever one they did first. Confirming this, Regus will inform the party of a demonologist who is arriving from the capital provinces in a few days. The scholar is sent to determine the cause of the demon problem within the province and will require protection to do so. Because of the recent assault, Regus feels that he cannot truly spare any of his men to escort the academic, therefore asking the players. If the party shows interest, the hunt captain will leave a message with Master Remus once the demonologist has arrived. By that time, the players are asked to report to the Argonian consulate nearby to begin their quest. This leads into the quest The Journey Down.
