Risevar Town Settlement in The Kingdom of Banteave | World Anvil

Risevar Town

A wealthy city, long since overspilling its useless walls. Full of shouting merchants, corrupt officials, the stink of civilization and a thousand shady opportunities awaiting you in darker corners. Risevar is full of forgotten taverns where traders do business without the trappings of real names, paperwork or tariffs. It's the bustling, ugly beating heart of the Barony of Risevar, and the farmers bringing their harvests to sell here do so knowing exactly what kind of lion's den they're walking into.

Government

Burgher-lead, appointed by the Baron to oversee the city and ensure peace and order.

Defences

Has walls, but the town has long since overtaken them. There is a town watch that patrols the streets, though they are notoriously corrupt. The militia serves as its standing guard, and a levy can be called up as needed.

Industry & Trade

A great deal of trade passes through Risevars walls, coupled with the proceeds of hundreds of cottage industries and farms in the surrounding lands. A river flows closeby, powering the mighty watermills built along the riverside. Aside from it's farmlands overflowing with staple crops, Risevar is home to many thriving textile mills, clothiers and tailors.

Infrastructure

Sitting at a crossroads between the Heartlands and the outskirts of the Highlands, Risevar Town boasts cobblestone roads, sturdy bridges and a network of roadside inn and flophouses that offer shelter to passing travellers.

Guilds and Factions

Organized criminal gangs thrive in Risevar Town, and the City Watch is the biggest gang of them all. Their extra "taxes and fees" help grease the wheels to make your stay in Risevar a pleasant one... or at the very least, a safe one. Guilds of carters, wheelwrights, millers, tailors and grocers have also formed in the interest of self-preservation.

Geography

A deep network of caverns and tunnels run underneath Risevar Town, with some of the smaller tunnels extending out for miles beyond the city walls. Some are occasionally flooded from the rising river, making them perilous to traverse. Smugglers, runaways and other, more malevolent things occasionally make their home there.

Natural Resources

Risevar Town is built near good farmland and a large river. There is suitable timber in the nearby hills.
