Redehall City Settlement in The Kingdom of Banteave | World Anvil

Redehall City

Opulent, Imposing and Magnificent. The seat of Banteavan power is a symbol of the crown's wealth and influence. It has weathered several sieges, famine, usurpation and strife, and still it stands. Many are drawn to Redehall City seeking prosperity, enlightenment, the blessing of the Six Saints or the favour of the courts. It's a prominent trade port, a thriving market, home to scholars and sellswords and everyone in between. The banners of House Dillestone fly proudly from the battlements, and even the city militia bears their hues of purple, white and gold.    But behind the ornate towers and bustling markets, a thousand strings are quietly being pulled and woven by courtiers, spies, rumourmongers and information brokers. In this city lies the nexus of Banteavan politics; King Eadvard III may sit the throne, those underneath him are engaged in an endless jockeying for power, position and prestige. As Eadvard sinks deeper into despair, the fetid smell of opportunity floods the air in salons and banquet halls around the city, and eager diplomats and schemers vie to pour their honeyed words into the King's ears when he is at his weakest.    It's a gilded nest of vipers, nestled right in the bosom of Banteave.

Demographics

80% Banteavan, 10% Antari, 5% Dunefalli and 5% broken down among other visiting cultures.

Government

A Burgher is responsible for the day-to-day affairs of the town, supported by a council chosen from the merchants and guildmasters.

Defences

Redehall Castle is the mighty bastion lording over the city that can offer shelter to some (but not all) of the cityfolk in the event of a prolonged siege. There is a city wall that still offers some protection, and a standing militia and city watch keep the population safe and well-policed.

Industry & Trade

The city is blessed with a vibrant workforce of traders, builders, craftsmen and scholars. Ore mined from the Backbone that has made its way here down the river is forged into implements of strong iron. Bakeries work around the clock producing the bread that acts as a staple to the diet of commonfolk in the city. The taverns are full of riotous revelers serving everything from turnip stew to roast goose, and the brothels discretely cater to the tastes of all who walk through their door.

Infrastructure

As one of the most "modern" cities in Banteave, Redehall boasts fine bridges, roads, sturdy buildings of stone construction, a sewer system and many fine fountains bringing water to its inhabitants.

Points of interest

The Abbey of Painted Glass is one of the main points of interest within the city proper for those that follow the Six Saints.

Geography

Redehall is built upon the river, connected by three grand bridges of stone and wood. Redehall Castle lies on the northern side, while The Abbey of Painted Glass stands proudly upon the southern bank.
