King of Banteave Rank/Title in The Kingdom of Banteave | World Anvil

King of Banteave

Requirements

Ideally, the candidate assuming the crown should have seen their sixteenth summer (at minimum.) If a child heir is to take the throne, a regency council should also be formed to safeguard the kingdom until the heir comes of age.

Appointment

In the past, kings have travelled to Crag Ayl to set foot upon the ancient crowning stone used to christen clan leaders in the age before Banteave was Banteave. Some still undertake the journey, but more often in modern times the coronation is overseen by members of the Church and attended by the Great Houses.
Traditionally, the King or Queen of Banteave appoints a successor from among their direct, legitimate blood descendants. This does not necessarily have to be the eldest child. If the ruler is childless, they can nominate another blood relative, such as a sibling or, at a stretch, a cousin, niece or nephew, but their claim is considered weaker.
If a ruler passes without nominating an heir and no legitimate blood descendants can assume the mantle, it passes to their surviving family to decide among themselves who shall wear the crown. These kinds of discussions are always fraught and have, in the past, resulted in the absolute destruction of the House as petty infighting leads to open conflict between would-be claimants.

Duties

It is the duty of the king to rule fairly and justly, to bestow rank and titles as befits them, and to protect the lands and futures of the people of the Banteave.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

Typically, those granted rulership over Banteave reign until their death, upon which the crown passes to their appointed heir. However, some rulers in the past have been forced to relinquish the crown at the tip of a sword, or under threat of war from a majority of disgruntled Houses.
