Sunderhelm Settlement in The Kingdom of Banteave | World Anvil

Sunderhelm

Alaric Bantevar strode through the battlefield like a giant, hewing down foes left and right. When he finally fell upon Clan Chief Dynail, the Antari leader cursed Alaric for ever setting foot upon their homelands. Alaric demanded that Dynail and his men surrender, but Dynail would not yield; nothing was going to stop him from landing a blow upon the invader, even if it was to be his last act. Unexpectedly, Alaric accepted Dynail's request, let his blade and shield drop to his side, and invited Dynail to strike him where he stood. But, he warned, should Dynail accept this bargain, Alaric would show no mercy to his kin and would pursue any Antari who fled the battle like a hound running down a wounded doe.  Dynail scoffed at the foreign invader's claims, raised his axe high, and brought it down upon the head of Alaric. True to his word, Alaric didn't move to dodge or block the blow. There was a great thunderclap that shook the earth, and when Dynail opened his eyes again, he saw Alaric's helmet lay shattered at his feet. Alaric himself was unharmed, and slew Clan Chief Dynail without another word.

  •   Sunderhelm is the main settlement in the Barony of Catena , a prominent trade town situated at the crossroads leading to Redehall, Riservar, Ninetaver and Bridemare. Built at the site of a great battle from the Invasion of the Norvalled Raiders, farmers occasionally turn up shattered bits of ancient Norvalled armor or Antari spears and axes when they plough their fields. The Sundered Helm in question allegedly belonged to Alaric Bantevar , but the rusted remains of the broken helmet that give this town its name could just as easily have belonged to any of the Norvalled adventurers that joined the battle all those centuries ago.   The Sunderfolk don't care. They'll still happily charge you a fistful of Banteavan marks for the pleasure of seeing "Alaric's Helm" if you're gullible enough to fall for it, and then they'll promptly direct you to their friend's taphouse where the innkeeper will proceed to bleed you dry, one small fee at a time.   Sunderhelm thrives on visitors; the Barony of Catena is hardly big enough to sustain itself on peasant labour alone, so the lifeblood of the community remains the long line of coachhouses, theatres, inns, taverns and brothels that populate its streets. The ale and whiskey served here is especially potent, and more than one traveller finding themselves here for the night has awoken the next morning nursing a brutal headache. The locals, naturally, have dubbed all hangovers as "Being Sundered," and consider it a rite of passage for newcomers to the town.
