Agent

AY-jent

Qualifications

Once a Steward reaches this rank, they return to Bastion for further training - the much-dreaded Pre-Officer's School. The course material could be completed in one year, but usually takes around twice as long because it is studied during a temporary two-year attachment to an Inspector or Commandant as their aide.

The course has no time limit, but rather a series of 'checks' must be made by their supervising officer until they are ready to take on the role. Some amount of prestige is placed on the amount of time an applicant takes to complete this course. These trials prepare them for a semi-administrative role where they will have little to no support - compared to the mental stress of an officer's station, and when combined with the knowledge that they have gained during their studies, they are quite ready to handle the administrative role of an Agent.

Agents are still active in the field, however. There are no requirements for this side of the promotion, but a prospective Agent must be capable beyond the expectations of a Constable, able to engage in single combat against the worst that any Constable would call backup for.

Appointment

The promotion from Constable to Agent is very similar to the promotion from Deputy Constable to Constable - a small ceremony formalised by the local commander or starship Commandant.

It is worth noting in this section that this is where the ranks between the Constabulary and Overwatch begin to differ. Those performing the duties of the Constabulary are promoted to Inspector, and those within Overwatch gain the rank of Commandant.

Responsibilities

The role of Agent remains a simple one, similar to Constable but larger in scale and difficulty. They must guide and coordinate Constables in multi-pronged attacks in seemingly unlinked cases that are nonetheless the many tentacles of one crime family or another. Their skill at managing the timing of operations, resources, and most importantly the mental pressure on the Stewards that they serve is much of why the Stewards are able to handle such vast amounts of stress.

As part of this vital duty, they are provided with a new authority: that of hiring Bounty Hunters. They may be used to tie up loose ends, an inconspicuous ear in the crowd, or even the occasional assassin - although the occasional cunning Agent has hired a targeted hunter to take out another, providing the Stewards with a win-win situation.

Benefits

Has the authority to hire Bounty Hunters on behalf of the Stewards.

Accoutrements & Equipment

Agents are often provided with a small data port at a local outpost, where they can carry out their information-heavy tasks in some comfort. Their assigned quarters are often small and shared, however, as they still spend a considerable amount of time in the field with their troops and observing first-hand information.

History

In the days before the formation of the Absalom Pact, this was the only field rank within the Stewards. Agents worked alone and were left to their own devices, for the most part.

Similar Ranks

Agent is a unique rank in that there are a few variations - all with an equal amount of authority. Stewards that have been invited to join the secretive branch known as Ops are given the rank of Special Agent, an authority that exists alongside their standard rank and is invoked (and therefore revealed) only if necessary. Other Stewards, usually those too wounded, elderly or strained to continue in their current assignment, may be assigned as a Staff Agent: helping to fulfil internal and sensitive information tasks and administration.
