Deputy Constable

DEP-you-tee KON-sta-bull

Deputy Constables are the most commonly encountered Stewards in the Pact Worlds. They serve either the Constabulary as elite pseudo-police, or Overwatch as patrolling pilot-marines.

Qualifications

Many Deputy Constables proceed through training before gaining their 'freedom', but despite popular belief this is not strictly a requirement. Occasionally, individuals who have proven themselves to high-ranking officers are offered a shortcut into the Stewards - although they are usually still watched over by a Constable for a few months, just in case.

Appointment

Once a Neophyte is approved by their attached Constable, they are promoted to Deputy Constable and sent on their own into the field. Although there is usually a small ceremony conducted between the Neophyte, their Constable and an Inspector or Commandant, it is traditional for the Deputy Constable's first mission to be on their own.

Duties

The weight of the Stewards' reputation hangs heavily from the shoulders of their Deputy Constables. They are tasked with justly and accurately discerning the truth in the most difficult of crimes, engaging their minds and bodies in violent competition against the most challenging criminals that harm the Pact Worlds. They are to be near-paragons of good, never wavering in the face of bribes or threats - of which they often face a barrage.

But these demands pay for themselves in the long run: the reputation of the Stewards extends even to its most lowly-ranked troops, enabling peace (or at least, a rough equivalent) to reign over the Pact Worlds.

Responsibilities

Deputy Constables are offered a huge variety of freedom in their task. Often, Constabulary Deputy Constables are assigned to a single city or area (such as a desert or forest spanning thousands of kilometers, or a populated inland sea) but as the foes they fight against are often not limited to simply one convenient location, they are free to follow leads off-world, with their jurisdiction only restricted to the borders of Pact Space. Occasionally they may hand over a major lead to their commanding Constable and complete matters within their assigned area, but more often than not those are problems that crumble away once the leadership is removed.

Overwatch Deputy Constables fulfill the role of starfighter pilots, gun crew, engineers and so on. They take orders comparitively more rigidly from their commanding Constable, who also acts as their 'wing leader' in starship dogfighting.

Benefits

Deputy Constables have access to the most basic levels of the Stewards' armoury, the specifics of which vary from location to location. They also receive a regular pay, usually based on a monthly payment although some outpost commanders have started a recent trend in paying per-task.

Accoutrements & Equipment

Deputy Constables are provided with access to their local Stewards resources - weaponry, armour and vehicles.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

Most often, Deputy Constables are removed from their rank for reasons of stress. As they are not experienced enough to serve in an administrative role, they are given an honourable discharge with a letter of commendation attached. It is rare that any should be discharged for dishonourable conduct, but not unheard of - and it is certainly not announced to the public.

Cultural Significance

Although the lowest ranks of the Stewards are known to most everyone in the Pact Worlds, they are still most often referred to as 'Steward' as a standard title.

Many cities have at least one Deputy Constable assigned to them, but large towns often have to share with at least one other nearby town. Metropolises and the largest space stations may have additional Deputy Constables assigned to them, although they will rarely have an opportunity to work alongside each other.
