The Clockwork Empire

To the west lies the Clockwork Empire and its capital of Simmsmout, a religious capitalist state where wealth and secrets reign supreme. Ruled by the Clockwork King, a self proclaimed 'man made god,' the Clockwork Empire considers itself the height of knowledge and culture within the Everwilds. Magic is seen as being a blight upon the world, and is strictly forbidden. Those who are found to have potential to wield it are sent away to the mines in Diggersveil or the Boneyard, never to be heard from again. Technology is seen as the answer to all problems in this city, and the great iron forges choke the air with smoke, and the water with silt, as the inventions of the rich and powerful scientists who run the economy stomp through the streets, enforcing their black and white code of 'morality.' When the rich grow tired of the smog of the capital, they travel East to the recently annexed Necropolys, a hot-springs paradise right on the edge of the necrotic wastes, just be wary of the locals, they are very dedicated to their god . . .

Structure

Theocratic capitalist. The church rules controls the military and the banks and employs investors who head up massive corporations that bring in money for themselves and the church.   These corporations are the true backbone of the Empire. They fight and bicker with each other for various contracts handed out by the Church and shadow wars are often fought behind closed doors.

Public Agenda

The Church's primary objective is to stamp out all magic within the world. Due to the magical aberrations created by magical misuse during the cataclysm, the use of magic during the Cataclysm, and the innate edge magic gives those who can wield it over others, it is seen as a blight upon the world and something to be purged.

Assets

Iron, Coal, Stone, and many precious metals are mined at the many strip mines of the empire. Furthermore, the empire exports technology for other nations to use.

History

The Empire was founded shortly after the end of the cataclysm. The Clockwork King was born shortly before the start of the cataclysm and fought in the final battle. After slaying the evil god Diavalo, the Clockwork King hunkered down to keep an eye on the final resting place of the vile god. The cult of Clockwork built a village around the feet of their King, and that village slowly grew as more people decided they felt safe living in the shadow of the hero of the cataclysm. Eventually, the village grew into a city, and the city into a Kingdom, the cult became a church, and the Empire was born. . .

Demography and Population

The Clockwork Empire mostly consists of Gnomes, Warforged, and Tritons. However, anyone can apply for citizenship, as long as you have the money to get the wheels of bureaucracy turning.
If traveling to imperial lands, it is important to remember their cultural tells. When approaching another Imperial, it is traditional to clasp both hands over your chest and give a slight bow as a greeting. This indicates respect and open handedness. It is usually considered to be of bad form to bring up magic or religion, however politics and business are usually fair game. The general work atmosphere of the empire is that if you aren't working, you are wasting time and money, overworking is a problem within the society, even among high ranking officials. That being said, when Imperials do take time off, they usually spend it going to lavish dinner parties or wandering around the merchants quarter buying useless nick knacks or playing games in an arcade. It is very unusual to see an outsider anywhere but within the merchants quarter so anyone other than a gnome or a triton seen outside of one of these areas is usually treated with suspicion, even if they are legally citizens.
Magic is a maligned curse, when the world burned and civilization fell, it was due to the power vested into the hands of mages. Magic raises men above their peers. Those who wield magic desire to rule over others and use magic to control and oppress. Technology is the great equalizer. Through technology, all can be equal, all can hold sway over their own fates. He who would hold the power of magic in his own hands does not seek equality, but seeks domination. Do not suffer the fool who entreats with the forbidden fruit of magic. Remove him from among you. Cast him out, purge him from your lands.

The Empire has a long and storied History and venerates several major figures in their history.   First, there is High Cleric John Potts, he was the first Cleric of the Clockwork King and founded the town of Simmsmout after the Cataclysm. The month of Tribus is held in celebration of the founding and in veneration of the memory of John Potts.   Fronzure de'Laficet was the king of the Tritons who surrendered his royal position to the Clockwork King, joining the remnants of the Triton kingdom with the Clockwork Empire. This bolstered the Empire's power and marked a turning point in their history. The thirtieth day of the month of Octos is held in remembrance of this day and this figure.   General Zorokad was the first living construct born of the Clockwork King. Under his command, the grand highway was built and the Empire began to grow rapidly through trade with outside nations. General Zorokad still lives and acts as a teacher at the Imperial Academy. His birth is celebrated on the 6th day of the month of Seks.   Most recently, Alexander Potts, decedent of John Potts managed to pacify the Cult of Atlus in Necropolys and bring that city under the banner of the Empire. He is recognized as a war hero and a powerful cleric of the Clockwork Empire. His victory is celebrated on the 25th day of the month of Duodecima.
