Demons

Demons were the brainchild of the dark god Kyvos, and were a major part of his plans to invade and conquer the other 7 realms. He got the idea from a conversation with Praelatamis, an expert on the powers of light and darkness. Kyvos tricked Praelatamis into revealing dark knowledge of how spirits could be corrupted by using chaos; but this was not enough for Kyvos. Wishing for more control, he asked what would happen should a spirit be injected with devil blood instead, which Praelatamis did not know. At this point, Praelatamis become nervous, and began questioning Kyvos' motives. However, Kyvos deflected by saying he was worried the gods of the other 7 realms were making creatures in this manner; for war. This placated Praelatamis enough that Kyvos was able to complete the first stage of his plan in secret.

Kyvos' original plan was to make a pact with the Devils where they would give him their blood and he would create demons for them to command. Once they weakened the other 7 realms enough, Kyvos would swoop in and conquer them. He promised the devils that he would then give them their own realm, one where they would rule as they wished, and that they would be free from persecution, but in reality he planned to betray them. Once the devils were out of the way, Kyvos would then dispose of the other gods of the eighth realm if they did not submit to his power, and then (so he thought) usher in a golden era for the whole perfection. In his mind, it was a brilliant idea- the other realms who oppressed their people would be torn down, the devils who had caused issues for so long would be destroyed, and everything would flourish under his benevolent rule. But in making this plan Kyvos had lost something far more important than what he stood to gain: he lost his connection to justice, truth, and committal to good, and so he was already well on his way to becoming a dark tyrant.

Luckily for the realms, Kyvos' plans did not go as he wished. While he tempted many, if not most of the strongest devils in the world to give their blood in the pursuit of power, there were still many devils who did not wish to work with him. Thus, the production of demons was slower than planned. Additionally, under the close watch of the most powerful devils in the universe, binding the demons in a way that they seemed loyal to the devils but would always obey Kyvos over the devils was difficult. Also, the other gods of the eighth realm, upon discovering the demons had begun to hold meeting on what to do with them, which if he did not attend would look suspicious. At this point, they still believed Kyvos, but that would soon change. It is unsure exactly how this occurred, but the plot was somehow exposed. Perhaps Praelatamis' gut told him that Kyvos had lied, perhaps the devils betrayed him, or perhaps the gods sensed Kyvos' magic where it should not have been. Either way, a bloody battle between Kyvos and the other gods soon began in what is known as the gods' war. Kyvos and the devils fought on one side, and the other gods fought on the other. It is during this conflict that Praelatamis become permanently scarred. Despite fighting fiercely, Kyvos was bound using a modified version of his own spell which bound the demons. His devil allies scattered across the realm and beyond, and the gods sealed themselves off.

The devils retained control of the demons, however, forcing their chaos into order, for during the fighting the devils had become more ordered and were less connected to chaos. As for the demons outside the realm border? The devils claim their kin on the outside have demons unrestricted in power under their control that will soon break the barrier, and work with them to conquer the world, but this is a dubious claim as devils rarely work together and they would then be subject to these now-foreign devils as well, so they would probably be fighting against them even now if it were true.

Real, confirmed demons are organized into 6 groups; categories 1-5 and wildcard demons, which is determined by the Demonologist guilds.

  • Of these categories, category 1 demons are the least threatening of all. Category 1 demons are only threatening on an individual level and often not even that. Usually, they are used by devils to cause mischief and harm, as they aren't worth much and won't leave the devil vulnerable to rivals should they perish. The most famous of type 1 demons is the lowly imp. These demons are formed when something goes wrong in the process of molding a spirit into a demon. When the process fails, a type one demon may be born.
  • Moving up the ranks, category 2 Demons pose a greater threat than their Category 1 counterparts, and often go after more inhabited places, as they can hold their own in combat. They are able to fight and win against the average man, but are hindered by their nature and are not a huge threat on their own. Isolated, they cannot hope to succeed against a sufficiently prepared town, but nobody is ready for combat at all times. Most category 2 demons have glaring weaknesses which make them unfit for general combat, though demons such as the nightmare can be problematic if they aren't discovered in time. Type two demons are often demons which, although they were created properly, were either not evil enough or too weak to form a "proper demons".
  • Category 3 Demons pose a significant threat to society as those within this category often influence actions such as murder, thievery, debauchery, etc. This is the turning point of demons where they start to become more deadly, and can be real threats to mortal villages even when alone. Demons of this strength form the backbone of the Devil armies, fulfilling a role akin to rank and file soldiers when deployed as such. However, only the most disciplined and trained warriors can hope to defeat them, for they have powers far beyond the average soldier. Category 3 demons are also sufficiently canny to take actions other than violence in order to defeat a foe, with the most famous of these tactics being the seduction techniques of succubi and incubi.
  • Category 4 Demons are an eminent threat on those who inhabit its realm of influence due to their prowess. This category is populated mostly by demons that affect the psyche, as these demons radiate power which makes it hard to stand up to and fight them. They are the elites of demon kind, and the death of even one 4 demon can be a greater blow to a devil lord than the antihalation of an entire brigade of lesser demons. They all possess a number of tricks with which to defeat even the strongest warrior, and their auras make these fights all the more difficult. Tier 4 Demons such as the debauched Saturyn are infamous throughout the lands, with armies fleeting at the sight of these horrifying creatures. Any demon of category 4 or above is a demon which contains multiple human souls and potentially multiple animal souls or monstrous souls as well, which is what gives them their great strength.
  • Still, category 4 demons are nothin compared to the demons which reside in the vaunted category 5. Such demons are the most malicious and evil of demons and are considered to be on par with Devils in terms of strength and cruelty. These are some of the oldest known demons and have deep connections with the chaos and the Devils that they serve. They often are given names as a form of recognition for their terrifying deeds, something many demons crave but few achieve. Category 5 demons are extremely rare and dangerous; there are only ever a few of them at any given time, as even their devils masters fear their power if unleashed. They are extremely hard to raise and train, and the death of a category 5 demon can cripple its devil master, leaving them vulnerable to attacks by rival demon lords. This, alongside their power, makes devil lords reluctant to utilize them- but if they do, all hell is sure to break loose. No mere mortal can match beings like a Balor or Leviathan in terms of raw power and magical ability.
  • Though also deadly, Wildcard Demons are known only for the inconsistency in both power level and influence. Some wildcard demons fluctuate wildly in ability levels- at one moment they could be as weak as a Category 1, and the next be classified as a Category 5. Others have great variety in individual strength throughout their species and are considered too unstable to use in breeding programs. Wildcard demons are almost never used by devils because their inconsistency makes them unreliable servants, so they are often left to their own devices and don't serve any particular devil overlord. Many devils have tried to wipe out the "wild" demon populations, but their abilities are often unknown and this makes devils reluctant to attack them. When wildcard demons make it into the mortal realm, they can be exceedingly dangerous due to this same lack of knowledge. This category also contains mortals who became demons while still living, because these demons retain their mortal memories and their particular powers vary based on their pact they made with the devil they obtained their power from.

Demons are hatefully crafted by torturing and stretching different souls to create an abomination. For most demons, this contains either one sentient soul or one sentient soul and one non-sentient soul for beastlike demons. Depending on the different souls involved, one can obtain a variety of different demon types. However, this process is very unpredictable and often fails, resulting in weaker type one or two demons.
