Vrandakan Settlement in The Discontinuum | World Anvil

Vrandakan

The city of Vrandakan is the largest settlement on Klokken Isle, off the north east coast of Myruthea. It is currently a member of the Alchemical Alliance.

Districts

At the centre of the city is the Hillbrow district, illustrated in the image at the head of the article. This is the oldest part of the city and is enclosed within the Hill Wall. Outside the Hill Wall, the Hillskirts region stands in the shadows of the high ground and consists of a mixture of commercial and residential buildings.   Further out to the east, the suburb of Linrass extends to the river and at its limits are the farmlands that feed the city. In the south is the heavily forested area known as Thalkail Woods, only lightly settled but home to some of the richest citizens.   Werdown is a sprawling and more densely populated suburb to the west, which grew up around the Werik stone quarries in the age of the Arcane Supremacy, when the city expanded rapidly.

History

Although there was a small village here in the years before Vrandakan was granted city status, it is only when Emperor Paul II decreed that the regional government of the Old Pale Empire on Klokken Isle would be administered from this favourable location high in the central hills in 3648 BPC, that it became a settlement of sufficient consequence to be noted in the history books.   In 2433 BPC, one of the four famous Harmonic Resonators of the Way of the Harmonic Path was installed here in Flessing Park.

The Resonator was destroyed (along with the others) by the Planar Conformation but the site where it once stood is still a place of pilgrimage for the followers of the Way of the Harmonic Path.   The infamous mage Zemdath Romuth, also known as Zemdath the Terrible grew up in the quarry slums of Werdown at the end of the third millenium APC, although his contribution to the dark history at the beginning of the Time of Terrors would take place on another continent.   In much more recent times, Vrandakan was the capital of one of the five great nations known as the Jewelled Queendoms, and it was home to the greatest of them all, Queen Lyrinkath I, who ruled between 5581 APC and 5649 APC. The Queendom of Vrandakan fell when Queen Alice surrendered to the Mad Mage, Ixthamon, in 5937 APC.
