The Tree of New Greening

The Tree of New Greening was a giant oak which once grew on a ridge in the central belt of Myruthea to the east of the Eroveth mountains and which had attained a venerable age and a great height at the beginning of the 20th century APC. The tree was a well known local landmark on the road that linked Arginbury to Klaractazum.   It became world famous when it was chosen as the site for a meeting between the founders of the First Popular Ascendancy in 1916 APC. The significance of the tree came from the re-emergence of green shoots just two years earlier when many had thought the tree had finally died during the age of the Long Famine. Its successful survival through many years of harsh drought, provided exactly the right symbol of hope and renewal which politicians were looking for.

Geography

The area in which the tree grew lay within a sparsely populated deciduous woodland, broken into blocks of rough pasture and occasional rocky outcrops. Standing on locally high ground, it was part of a sweeping landscape that led up into the Eroveth mountains in the west and sloped gently down to the north and east in the direction where the North Eroveth Stream ultimately emerged from the hills, although the river itself was too far to see from the Tree of New Greening.
