Keldramys Settlement in The Discontinuum | World Anvil

Keldramys

Keldramys was the first city to receive a charter from the New Sophisticates after that short period of rapid early settlement in which the Foundation Cities were built.   Population growth was slow at the beginning of the Foundation Age but by 438 AF, the village of Keldramys, had grown sufficiently to warrant a formal acknowlegement of city status from the New Sophisticates.

Industry & Trade

Keldramys grew up around early quarrying and mining sites in the Cold Rise mountains of north east Trass. It becamse an important site for industrial and chemical processing as technology progressed.

History

In 677 AF, the Warriors of Keldramys engaging in a crusade as they saw it, destroyed the foundation city of Vesper. This infamous conflict was the first significant slaughter to take place since the troubles that had ended the Season Of Innocence before the Foundation Age began. It would be wrong to call it a battle, since Vesper, in common with all other cities at the time had no organised defences or defenders. Keldramys was supported by a faction in the parliament of the New Sophisticates, who were suspected of manipulating their leaders for their own ends. After 677 AF, the trust and openness that had characterised the early Foundation Age was broken forever and the cites began to arm themselves.   In 1642 AF in the age of the Succession Empires Keldramys became part of the Empire of the House of Thorns, ruled directly from Kingcardine. This was a peaceful annexation, when the king of Keldramys married into a line of the House of Thorns.   Although the early history of Keldramys draws most attention, due to its early charter and its infamous role in the sack of Vesper, the city did not really reach its peak until the age of the Trade Wars, or possibly even later, when there was great demand for the products of its factories. In the cover image, we see the brutalist concrete architecture typical of the city in 2110 AF. Only the Kelds ever seemed to love this self consciously challenging style of functional building.   Much later in 2968 AF, Keldramys was abandoned as a result of the Emptying of Earth, with declining populations and shrinking trade.
