Space Cowboy Rank/Title in The Delta Space | World Anvil

Space Cowboy

What is a Space Cowboy?

There are those that travel the galaxy, going from place to place, whether for trade, travel, or business each eking out a life for themselves by the skin of their teeth. A common sight in The Delta Space. But then, there are Space Cowboys, these lot of nomadic spacefarers are a step removed from your regular sort, and it's a title that only those with the strongest wills can attain. Many of which only begrudgingly accepting the weight of what the title means. And even amongst their own, only the bravest, strongest, and most cunning can make themselves into legends.   Space Cowboys are wanderers of the galaxy who have no home except the ships they travel the endless depths of space with. They are listless vagabonds, rebels without a cause, and gunmen for hire, jumping from system to system taking on the jobs that no one else can handle, or stomach. They are good, they are bad, and they are everything in between. If you have become known as a Space Cowboy it means you have a reputation, one that says you won't stay long, and that if you take on a job you will either finish it or die trying.

The Most Famous Cowboy

One of, if not the most famous Space Cowboys of all time was a Lupine named Sylas Rohn. With a calm demeanour, an unshakeable will that unnerved even the hardest cowboys, and a steady gun hand, it was unquestionable that Rohn was destined to be one of the all-time legends.    Not much is known about the early years of Rohn's life, but the man himself once confirmed with an associate that he was born on one of the worlds on the outer sectors of The Delta Space and that he left it as soon as he had the chance to. Leaving his past behind him once he did. His patronage is unknown, nor is it known how his Lupine parents made their way to the outer sectors as most Lupine communities have been settled in the mid-central sectors of The Delta Space.   However, what is known is the rise and illustrious career of Sylas Rohn once he became a Space Cowboy. Rohn was known to be impatient, and he treated his career in the same way, most start with small jobs and build up their credibility before taking on tougher jobs. Rohn was different, and within only a few months on the scene had taken on several dangerous gigs, ones that even the most experienced cowboys steered clear of. But not Rohn, he jumped into these jobs with gusto, resolving any job quickly between his wits and his famous sidepiece a .357 magnum called The Hangman. Which most believe was an Abnormality Objects, one that held a finicky attitude but granted powers of accuracy and increased firepower. When it felt like it.    But, like most Space Cowboys of renown Rohn's light would shine brightly for only a brief time. Like most cowboys, Rohn would face his end while on the job. And this one was a particularly nasty one. Rohn and a few close associates he had brought along, were tasked with infiltrating an orbiting reactor station in the Obor system. The station had been overtaken by a large contingent of crazed humanoid androids called The Severed. These androids, which were once a part of The Hivemind Sentius, had been removed from their collective's network because they brought dangerous glitches and faults to the system. They were deemed a threat to the network's overall health so they were cut loose. The Severed, typically violent and crazed beings, are bent on doing one thing, outside of being batshit crazy, and that is to rejoin the network. At any cost.    This specific group of Severed, infiltrated the station and commandeered it from the operating crew, killing them in the process. They did this in the hopes that they could use the station as an immense battery pack. Hooking themselves up to it and using it to supercharge themselves and attempt to reconnect to the hivemind network with whatever lingering connection they may have leftover. They hoped they would have enough power to break their way through the Hivemind Sentius's formidable firewall and forcibly rejoin the network. A ridiculous idea, but the Severed are not known for being as intelligent as their former network is.    Rohn and his crew were to find a way to remove the Severed from the station, either by persuasion or by force. Unfortunately, the latter would end up being the route taken, as The Severed were not keen to negotiate and opened fire immediately. During the fight, an important safety system was damaged and forced the station's reactor into overdrive pushing it to an imminent meltdown. One that would cause significant damage to the nearby planet, Isis, and its inhabitants if it were to blow.   Rohn's crew, after dispatching the remaining Severed began to retreat, but Rohn stayed behind against their objections. Rohn knew of a way to reduce the blast radius of the imploding reactor allowing his crew to escape, and to save the nearby planets from catastrophic horror. But, in return, he had to stay and manually activate the reactor's rapidly failing shield array the moment the reactor hit the threshold in which it would explode. His crew would protest until the very last moment they could, but Rohn wouldn't budge, even when they tried to forcibly remove him he promptly pushed them back with the use of his magnum, The Hangman. Begrudgingly they left, and that would be the last time anyone ever saw him.    Rohn was successful in his attempts, as the blast radius was severely reduced and no lives were lost. Except for, presumedly, his own. Though like many legends in The Delta Space nobody knows for sure, as no remains were ever discovered in the remnants of the station.

Deckard's Inn

An infamous meeting spot for Space Cowboys, commonly referred to as just Deckards it is located somewhere on The Variance, Space Cowboys come here to discuss business with each other, or more commonly, just to shoot the shit, have a few drinks, and forget all the crap they deal with on a daily basis.   The inn is neutral ground, and violence is highly dissuaded under the penalty of being blacklisted from the bar. A threat that most visitors take seriously, as Deckards is a great place to network. Visitors that do behave themselves though are free to stay as long as they wish and drink and chat their worries away. And for those in the good favour of the proprietor, they may even be given a few free drinks, and a discount if they need to stay in one of the dozen or so rooms for a night or two in between work.

A Rising Star

Jin Starunner is the most recent cowboy to come to into fame. But unlike many others that seek fame and the cash that typically follows, Starunner seems adverse to his sudden rise in popularity. He has only been a Space Cowboy for a few years and hadn't made any sort of name for himself, taking small jobs here and there and never staying in one system for long. And even though his new status is bringing in the potential for better work he has routinely turned down these high-end jobs telling people to get lost and to forget his name. Preferring to be left alone to wander, and take on less grandiose work. Though he may not have a choice sooner rather than later.

Nice article! Especially liked the story Lupine. That is definitely one of the good space cowboys :p Who actually grants the title of space comboy? Or is it something that is given to all mercenary nomads?

I am really excited to write more about the Lupine. I was influenced by the design of the characters for the music video for Magnum Bullets by Night Runner. One of my other articles, the one that talks about Lake Abhoria on planet Ciellia. The people in that article are influenced by the design of the characters in Starlight Brigade by TWRP. Which funny enough have the same guest singer.   This was one of those prompts that I kind of bent it a little from the original description. I don't view Space Cowboys as a title granted to them by an official or something like that. It is just something that is gained via reputation. It is kind of like a bounty hunter, they aren't told they are now bounty hunters but due to their work and their reputation they start being called that. So the reason why it isn't a title that many people look to "achieve" is because it means you have become a lost soul without a home.

Yeah I twisted the meaning on some of the prompts as well to make it better fit my world xp It does remain a title that needs to be earned so well done ^^

I think we need more space cowboys. I especially like the story of Lupine, who I'm convinced somehow made it out. (I never believe anybody is dead unless there is a body). I like how this title is earned purely by people knowing that you'd do a job or die trying.
