Session Report: The Gilden Cage

by Tom Ornsby

General Summary

Ebbon looked around the cell he had found himself in and sighed how had it all come to this? As his gaze drifted from left to right he noticed he wasn't alone. The cell has 3 other inhabitants, not surprising really as it would be a huge waste of space and resources. There seemed to be two other humans and a smaller creature that ebbon knew to be a goblin, the poor creature seemed to be petrified frantically looking everywhere and trying to make himself as small as possible. Not wanting to see the poor creature suffer ebbon walked over and offered his coat jacket, it was small protection from the situation they had both found themselves in but it was the best he could do, to his surprise the goblin accepted and thanked him quite eloquently.   In Ebbon’s experience most goblins were illiterate and spoke very little, showing next to no intelligence at all but this guy seemed very different. The goblin introduced himself as Morbitz and went on to ask if I had seen his tool box? An odd question in the circumstance but each to their own I guess. Not long after introducing myself to Morbitz one of the other inhabitants of Ebbon’s cell walked over and introduced himself as Dr Newton weiss a surgeon from one of the high temples of aphrodite. He seemed very well educated and extremely polite and took quite an interest in Morbitz and his tool bag, the conversation started to go over ebbon’s head and all he remembered was that Morbitz might have something called Angzitty and I hoped it wasn't contagious, so he took to studying the third and last inhabitant of his cell Thedoras was the name of the last person in the cell and on the surface he seemed a nice enough guy, very closed off and vague with his answers. Not surprising really considering where we was.   Overall ebbon was feeling pretty optimistic well optimistic enough considering that he was on his way to a new planet as an ‘indentured servant’ to pay off a crime he didn't even commit. It could of been worse he could of been stuck in the cell next to them, filled with orks and by the looks of them they were starting to get annoyed at our attempts to get to know each other. Yep…...they was getting very annoyed, less than ten minutes later they started hurling abuse and treats our way. Not one to back down from a fight ebbon traded off verbal threats with the orks and to his surprise the rest of his cell mates joined in and after some quick wit and a strange exchange of bodily fluids the orks backed down. Not long after the incident with the orks Ebbon and his cellmates where taken to the office of the ships warden Thonmur Bottlecloak who issued them all with data chips containing all their personal details and confirmed that life on daxu is going to be putting it politely shit.   On the way back to the cells Ebbon noticed the atmosphere had changed in the holding room, not only that but all the cells where now open and people where free to walk around. The distinct lack of guards and the large open space containing only the orks from the cell next to Ebbons it didn't take a genius to figure out what was going to happen next but as ebbon knew if they showed weakness now the rest of the journey would be hell for them so he marched straight up to the lead ork and punched him straight in the face. The resulting scuffle ended pretty much as quickly as it started, Ebbon’s cellmates where a very capable bunch which surprised him considering their occupations but he was very glad for the help. After that the rest of the journey went very uneventfully and they arrived on time at daxu, the ship entered the atmosphere and landed in the port of jadetown.   As we disembarked and stepped onto the docks a large crate was waiting for us, inside was Morbitz tool bag…..well this wasn't what Ebbon was expecting at all it was as tall as he was and then half again and built like an ogre of legend! Ebbon was in shock and that takes quite a bit to do, so much so that he didn't see how Morbitz got into his ‘tool bag’ but after a few minutes of banging and strange bubbling sounds the thing was walking and talking…. Ebbon decided this was probably the best time to go get booked in at their corporate approved inn and the thought of having a drink suddenly became the only thing he could think of.   The trip to the inn was also very uneventful but the walk was glorious, being cooped up in a voidship for 9 days and before that long stints in multiple cells actually being outside felt amazing. Ebbon for a time forgot about his indentured service and just enjoyed the clear skies and fresh air, this place was beautiful and intoxicating. Growing up on leonis Ebbons life was filled with a different kind of jungle, one created of metal and steel life here was very very different. Before he knew it he was stood outside of the Jolly Rancor, he could only imagine the name was ironic as when he entered the place was dead and in dire need of a refurbishment but as far as inns go he had seen worse. Making his way straight to the bar he introduced himself to the barkeep who went by the name of Raulf Lowell a pretty nondescript human who had look that he knew exactly who they where and why they was here.   Forgoing the meal allocated to him and accepting extra drink rations Ebbon asked Raulf about life on daxu and how it would be when they got to bran grove, not normally the most generous of people Ebbon knew it was going to be bad when Raulf topped up his drink for free as a token of condolence, apparently bran grove was as different as it could get from jadetown. Bran grove was situated in a large valley a good few hundred miles away and unlike jadetown that was built above the canopy of the trees bran grove was located on the surface of the planet in swampland. Knowing that things would only get worse tomorrow Ebbon finished his drinks and took his leave to go to his room and try get a decent night's rest, who knows when he will get another one for a while.   As he laid in his pod all he could think of was how his life had come to this point and what hell was waiting for him and his new friends in the morning...

Notes

The first session was done using the rules from unbound. This is a system that uses a deck of cards as its foundation and the relevant actions are determined by randomly drawing cards from the top of the deck and comparing against the GM’s draw, classic high card over low card system with different effects added depending on suit or if its a face card or not.   As a system it is great but unfortunately it doesn't work well for campaigns designed for extended sessions and it also doesn't give much room for character development and progression. Overall we felt even though the unbound system works great it suits more one shot games better than extended stories so we decided to use the Genisys system.
