Jovian

"Jovians are strong, quick, and rarely take anything too seriously. Their scoop pilots who harvest materials from the gas giant their moons orbit, are some of the best pilots humanity has to offer. I have not come across the origin of the five point harness, but if I had a guess I'd say that they were invented because humans keep letting Jovians drive things."   ~Quazhe, Kheezer Humanologist.

The Tontine

Dating from the very beginning of the colony, scoop pilots contributed parts of their exorbitant pay into a tontine. Originally, it was between flights of pilots, but the last survivors of these flights would rarely if ever actually claim the money. It would sit in accounts or transfer to the next tontine. Eventually, they all merged, and the Tontine opened up to all Jovians to get in on it. It's an absolutely absurd sum of money, and most Jovians contribute into it. A few hundred years previous to the Convergent Rush, the Technocrat of Jupiter used the money to establish a bank with a single account. It's the wealthiest bank under a human star, and while the last Jovian will eventually inherit it the whole sum, the bank accrues interest by lending and investing. A portion of Jovians earn a flat income from this interest, though to do so they still need to contribute a percentage of their total income.   This scheme has been decried by economists as a game of cups or the largest fraud in history, but if the bubble never bursts was it ever really a bubble?   The Tontine functions as 10 points of an Independent Income trait, so long as you continue to contribute 5% of all income into it (excluding what you've taken from the Tontine.) This trait has a 50% discount due to the restriction.

Family names

Jovians carry family names primarily from Southeast and Central Asia, and a new set of family names representing accomplishments or professions relevant to now.

Other names

The original colonists on the moons of Jupiter were scoop pilots that gathered material from the gas giant's atmosphere, an extremely dangerous and lucrative job. The practice of giving each other callsigns spread through their support personnel, and then to the colonists that trickled in during the resource rush. Most Jovians have callsigns, which range from whimsical to impressive.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

Jovians are 'collective capitalists' by culture. They're ambitious, want to get ahead, but watch out for each other. It's another run-on from the scoop pilots, who only survive through a combination of intense competitiveness and stubborn comraderie.

Common Dress code

Jovians wear practical clothing, often a version of the jumpsuits and jackets favored by PSC citizens as a whole.

Art & Architecture

Due to gravitic forces that occasionally overwhelm the Gravplating of their settlements, they build in squat buildings with high strength tensile material. As material improved, this style was less necessary over time but the aesthetic choice remained.

Foods & Cuisine

Algae-and-Bug farms on Callisto are the primary food source for Jovians. They have recipes in every combination of these ingredients.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Due to the hazards of the scoop pilots who form the core of the culture, a complex matrix of good luck rituals and superstitions. While the Jovians don't think twice about this, the rituals are often entirely indecipherable to outsiders.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

When children are born on Jupiter's moons, the family celebrates. By tradition, water from the impact crater of the TESS Nichtene is sprinkled over the infant's head for luck.

Coming of Age Rites

On reaching adulthood, a Jovian is traditionally thrown a celebration with an inheritance from their parents, complete with a monetary transfer and at least one good luck charm of some kind or another.

Funerary and Memorial customs

The typical Jovian funeral involves a wake complete with celebrating the passed's life and accomplishments before loading them in a tube and launching them into Jupiter's atmosphere.

Common Taboos

While flubbing their good luck rituals may result in mockery and derision or at worst a temporary shunning, betrayal of someone who depends on you, particularly at a critical moment, is considered a valid reason for violence.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Jovians tend to be compact, muscular, and dense. They have vaguely Asiatic features and tan to dark skin. High cheekbones and black hair are considered ideal.

Gender Ideals

Jovians are work-oriented, and productivity is a premium for both races.

Courtship Ideals

Jovians are family-oriented, and courtship almost always involves asking each others' families for permission. More often than not, families initiate the proceedings, though the days of arranged or forced marriages are long gone.

Relationship Ideals

Jovians generally want productive relationships where the pairing assists in business and has, to quote a favorite wedding toast, "Many fat children."
