Frosted Mountains
Stretching across much of northeast Tarien, this geographic region consists of mountains both harsh generally inhospitable. Taller than any other mountains on the continent, they boast snow capped peaks, sharp cliffs, and dangerous slides. While many of these mountains here have no other names, many of the ridges and spurs in this region are large enough to be called mountain ranges in their own right. Among them, the Dreuthekon and the Gestalt Mountains, which bookend the region, are the largest. Hidden amongst these peaks are dozens of valleys such as the Krelic Vale and Valley of Brenkarish, which sits at the base of the ever smoldering Serpent Mountain. The region's high lakes and annual snowmelt feed some of Tarien's mightiest rivers, including the Silver and the Pontrien.
Life among the peaks is hard and the creatures here stubbornly eek out an existence. Small ground dwellers, like the mountain hare and marmot dart from burrow to burrow, constantly on the look out for the great eagles that soar above and nest in the cliffs. Great spotted cats hunt sure footed sheep that fill the air with the sounds of horn-to-horn battles in the fall. And everyone is weary of the great bears that spend their short summers fattening up on anything that they can catch. All hide, however, when the dark shadows that blot out the sun pass overhead; a sure sign that one of the ranges great dragons is on the hunt.
The region also hides - somewhere - Tarien's one of most ancient ruins - the lost Khadric homeland of Khardin. It was in this fabled city where the Khadra first perfected the art of stoneworking and the notion of coins was created. Further east, past the desolation of Dragon Ridge, lies the Flietch-ta Empire, tucked into the long fertile valleys worked by the impoverished and enslaved.
